LEFT JOIN in ARel for ActiveRecord in Ruby on Rails
# Here's a contrived example of a LEFT JOIN using ARel. This is an example of
# the mechanics, not a real-world use case.
# NOTE: In the gist comments, @ozydingo linked their general-purpose ActiveRecord
# extension that works for any named association. That's what I really wanted!
# Go use that! Go: https://gist.github.com/ozydingo/70de96ad57ab69003446
# == DEFINITIONS
# - A Taxi is a car for hire. A taxi has_many :passengers.
# - A Passenger records one person riding in one taxi one time. It belongs_to :taxi.

Checkout github pull requests locally

Locate the section for your github remote in the .git/config file. It looks like this:

[remote "origin"]
	fetch = +refs/heads/*:refs/remotes/origin/*
	url = [email protected]:joyent/node.git

Now add the line fetch = +refs/pull/*/head:refs/remotes/origin/pr/* to this section. Obviously, change the github url to match your project's URL. It ends up looking like this:

One-line detailed logging for Rails 3 (ActiveSupport::Notifications) and later
# Outputs this at warn log level:
# 1.2.3.4 GET /path 200 OK BlahController#action HTML 938.2 (DB 11.8, View 719.7) {params} {optional params from flash[:log]}
#
# Save as config/initializers/oneline_detailed_logging.rb. Consider
# decreasing the log level from "info" to "warn" (in production.rb) so
# the one-line log message replaces the standard request logs.
# override process_action to add 2 things to the payload:
# - remote IP

Get the share counts from various APIs

Share Counts

I have always struggled with getting all the various share buttons from Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Pinterest, etc to align correctly and to not look like a tacky explosion of buttons. Seeing a number of sites rolling their own share buttons with counts, for example The Next Web I decided to look into the various APIs on how to simply return the share count.

If you want to roll up all of these into a single jQuery plugin check out Sharrre

Many of these API calls and methods are undocumented, so anticipate that they will change in the future. Also, if you are planning on rolling these out across a site I would recommend creating a simple endpoint that periodically caches results from all of the APIs so that you are not overloading the services will requests.

ruby-1.9.3-p327 cumulative performance patch for rbenv

This installs a patched ruby 1.9.3-p327 with various performance improvements and a backported COW-friendly GC, all courtesy of funny-falcon.

Requirements

You will also need a C Compiler. If you're on Linux, you probably already have one or know how to install one. On OS X, you should install XCode, and brew install autoconf using homebrew.
