Running Ubuntu on a Macbook Air

Running Ubuntu on a Macbook Air

You don't have to be a slave to OS X! Here's a guide to a sane dual-booting setup with Ubuntu 12.10 on your shiny MacBook Air. This is written and tested for a MacBook Air 5,2 (Mid 2012), but likely works the same with any modern Macbook.

Install according to instructions at this URL:

cd ~
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre-headless -y
# Download the compiled elasticsearch rather than the source.
wget http://download.elasticsearch.org/elasticsearch/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-0.20.2.tar.gz -O elasticsearch.tar.gz
tar -xf elasticsearch.tar.gz
rm elasticsearch.tar.gz
sudo mv elasticsearch-* elasticsearch
sudo mv elasticsearch /usr/local/share

[bootstrap] fixing issue #4153 `navbar-fixed-top`
function fixNavbarIssue(){
/* Quick & dirt draft fix for the bootstrap's navbar-fixed-top issue.
Overview
When you call a given section of a document (e.g. via <a href="#section"> or domain.com/page#section1) browsers show that section at the top of window. Bootstrap's navbar-fixed-top, _since it's fixed_, *overlays* first lines of content.
This function catches all of the <a> tags pointing to a section of the page and rewrites them to properly display content.
Works fine even if a # section is called from URL.

You're Missing the Point of Promises

This article has been given a more permanent home on my blog. Also, since it was first written, the development of the Promises/A+ specification has made the original emphasis on Promises/A seem somewhat outdated.

You're Missing the Point of Promises

Promises are a software abstraction that makes working with asynchronous operations much more pleasant. In the most basic definition, your code will move from continuation-passing style:

getTweetsFor("domenic", function (err, results) {
 // the rest of your code goes here.
