Installation of Arch Linux on a USB stick with UEFI and legacy BIOS Support

Our goal here is to have one USB stick to rule them all. Objectives:

  • We want a full system - not a live CD
  • We want to boot this system on a Macbook Pro (requires UEFI)
  • We want to boot this system on a Acer C720 Chromebook (requires Legacy BIOS support)
  • We want the system "functional"

The last bullet is subject to interpretation, but I'm defining functional as:

  • X Windows works (with LXDE)

This is a Windows-specific walkthrough for installing Vim, Vundle and ConEmu

Vim, Vundle and ConEmu on Windows

Let's start by getting it out on the table: Sublime Text is great, and version 3 should no longer be considered "abandonware" as of build 3065. Sublime Text served me very, very well over the years. That said, trying out new things is a major part of leveling-up, and in that vein Vim deserves a go. (And have you seen some of those thoughtbot guys flying around in Vim? It's awesome!)

Getting Vim up-and-running on your Windows machine doesn't have to be an all-day project. In this post, we'll walk through:

  • Installing gVim, which gives us both the "classic" command line version as well as the graphical version
  • Installing Vundle, the best way to handle Vim-enhancing packages
  • Installing ConEmu, a supercharged command line emulator for Windows

Gmail script filter based on search queries

Gmail Filter by Search Query

This program, in the form of a configuration script and a main script, allows for complicated Gmail search queries to be used as filters. It also lets you do more advanced stuff you can't do with ordinary filters, like label based on whether an email contains a specific kind of attachment.

Installing

  1. Go to script.google.com.
  2. Go to File > New > Script File, and type Main as the title for the new script. This will be for the main script.
  3. Delete any pre-filled text in the script file, and copy main.gs from this gist to that file.
  4. Go to File > New > Script File again, and type Config as the title for the new script. This will be for configuration.

FreeBSD on a MacBook Pro

FreeBSD on a MacBook Pro

Since 2008 or 2009 I work on Apple hardware and OS: back then I grew tired of Linux desktop (which is going to be MASSIVE NEXT YEAR, at least since 2001), and switched to something that Just Works. Six years later, it less and less Just Works, started turning into spyware and nagware, and doesn't need much less maintenance than Linux desktop — at least for my work, which is system administration and software development, probably it is better for the mythical End User person. Work needed to get software I need running is not less obscure than work I'd need to do on Linux or othe Unix-like system. I am finding myself turning away from GUI programs that I used to appreciate, and most of the time I use OSX to just run a terminal, Firefox, and Emacs. GUI that used to be nice and unintrusive, got annoying. Either I came full circle in the last 15 years of my computer usage, or the OSX experience degraded in last 5 years. Again, this is from a sysadmin/developer ki

JS hoisting by example

JavaScript function hoisting by example

Below are many examples of function hoisting behavior in JavaScript. Ones marked as works successfuly print 'hi!' without errors.

To play around with these examples (recommended) clone them with git and execute them with e.g. node a.js

Notes on hoisting

(I may be using incorrect terms below, please forgive me)

Step-by-step instructions to build Emacs for Windows 64 bit with MSYS2 and MinGW-w64. Now `native-comp` supported.

Build Emacs-w64 with MSYS2/MinGW-w64 with Native Compilation

Instructions are modified from emacs-w64 Wiki page by zklhp. Many thanks for sharing!

  1. Download the latest MSYS2 from this download page.

  2. Install MSYS2 to, for example, C:\msys2 (make sure no space in path to avoid unwanted problems).

  3. Optionally prettify the MSYS2 console mintty with ~/.minttyrc to make it more pleasing to eyes. Thanks to this awesome theme!
