_Never_ -Sy when installing!

Once upon a time there was a user that wanted to install firefox.

The user tried to do pacman -S firefox but it didn't work. The all mighty pacman reported that firefox-3.2.4-1.i686.pkg.tar.gz could not be found on his mirror. So the user tried pacman -Sy firefox. It worked and the user rejoiced since he could once again go and troll /h/.

But all was not good. The user had made a grave error!

See, when the user told the almighty pacman to -Sy firefox, pacman did

Big list of http static server one-liners

Each of these commands will run an ad hoc http static server in your current (or specified) directory, available at http://localhost:8000. Use this power wisely.

Discussion on reddit.

How to comment out stuff in Markdown on GitHub?

Comments in GitHub flavour of Markdown

As answers to this Stack Overflow question reveal, using <!--- and ---> or <!-- and --> works (view source by clicking "Raw"):

base64 that actually encodes URL safe (no '=' nonsense)
"""
base64's `urlsafe_b64encode` uses '=' as padding.
These are not URL safe when used in URL paramaters.
Functions below work around this to strip/add back in padding.

Most VPN Services are Terrible

Most VPN Services are Terrible

Short version: I strongly do not recommend using any of these providers. You are, of course, free to use whatever you like. My TL;DR advice: Roll your own and use Algo or Streisand. For messaging & voice, use Signal. For increased anonymity, use Tor for desktop (though recognize that doing so may actually put you at greater risk), and Onion Browser for mobile.

What forces layout/reflow. The comprehensive list.

What forces layout / reflow

All of the below properties or methods, when requested/called in JavaScript, will trigger the browser to synchronously calculate the style and layout*. This is also called reflow or layout thrashing, and is common performance bottleneck.

Generally, all APIs that synchronously provide layout metrics will trigger forced reflow / layout. Read on for additional cases and details.

Element APIs

Getting box metrics
  • elem.offsetLeft, elem.offsetTop, elem.offsetWidth, elem.offsetHeight, elem.offsetParent

Permanently disable Windows Defender and other annoyances in Windows.

Instructions

  • To disable a service, download Disable<Service>.reg and double-click to import. (Replace <Service> with the name of the service you want to disable.)
  • To re-enable a service, download Enable<Service>.reg and double-click to import. (Replace <Service> with the name of the service you want to enable.)

Note that if you save the files by copying them into a text editor, they may need to be saved with Windows-style line endings (\r\n).
