Auto-enable Local HTTP Caching in Test Kitchen

Auto-enable Local HTTP Caching in Test Kitchen

Note: total experiment and hack, looks nasty, could be awesome:

Setup

  • Drop the kitchen.local.yml into $HOME/.kitchen/config.yml
  • Install polipo (with Mac: brew install polipo, with Ubuntu: apt-get install polipo)
  • Drop polipo-start and polipo-console somewhere useful (perhaps $HOME/bin?)

Webhooks on Codeship
If you only want to send a hook for successful builds at the end of your test commands add something like:
wget YOUR_URL
and it will send the hook whenever your build passes. You can run any command there and aren't limited to wget or anything at all.
2) Send a hook for a failed command and fail the build:
SOME_COMMAND || bash -c "ANY_COMMAND_TO_SEND_HOOK; exit 1"

a simple git branching model

a simple git branching model (written in 2013)

This is a very simple git workflow. It (and variants) is in use by many people. I settled on it after using it very effectively at Athena. GitHub does something similar; Zach Holman mentioned it in this talk.

Update: Woah, thanks for all the attention. Didn't expect this simple rant to get popular.

How to use rails load paths, app, and lib directories.

In Rails 3

NOTE: This post now lives (and kept up to date) on my blog: http://hakunin.com/rails3-load-paths

If you add a dir directly under app/

Do nothing. All files in this dir are eager loaded in production and lazy loaded in development by default.

If you add a dir under app/something/

How to set up your VPS with Chef Solo

How to set up your VPS with Chef Solo

1. What is it?

There are many different provisioning tools out there, the most popular of which are Chef and Puppet. Chef uses Ruby, Puppet uses a DSL (Domain Specific Language), there are others that use simple bash too, but today we're going to focus on Chef Solo.

2. Dependencies

To get Chef working properly on your local machine you need a few things.

Make sure you use Ruby 1.9.x and not Ruby 2.x as you will get errors with the json 1.6.1 gem on 2.x. Use rbenv or RVM to manage several different Rubies on the one machine.
