Decrypt a Legacy ASP.NET Forms Authentication Cookie (that uses SHA1 validation, and AES encryption) - without horrendous dependencies on system.web.. This allows you to decrypt a forms authentication cookie that was created in ASP.NET 3.5, from an ASP.NET 5 application.
internal static class FormsAuthenticationTicketHelper
{
private const byte CURRENT_TICKET_SERIALIZED_VERSION = 0x01;
private const int MAX_TICKET_LENGTH = 4096;
// Resurrects a FormsAuthenticationTicket from its serialized blob representation.
// The input blob must be unsigned and unencrypted. This function returns null if
// the serialized ticket format is invalid. The caller must also verify that the
// ticket is still valid, as this method doesn't check expiration.

Making Bookmarklets

I'm feeling very clever. I've got this sweet line of javascript that replaces "cloud" with "butt". My mom would LOVE this, but she doesn't computer very well. I'm afraid to show her the Developer Console and have her type/paste this in. But she IS pretty good at bookmarks, she knows just how to click those!

A bookmark normally takes you to a new web page. A bookmarklet is a bookmark that runs javascript on the current page instead of taking you to a new page. To declare that it is a bookmarklet, the "location" it points to starts with javascript:.

monitoring manifesto

monitoring: what I want

I've recently shifted from a straight engineering job to a job with a "dev/ops" title. What I have discovered in operations land depresses me. The shoemaker's children are going unshod. Operations software is terrible.

What's driving me craziest right now is my monitoring system.

what I have right now

What I have right now is Nagios.

This write-up is several years out of date! You probably shouldn't use it.

a simple git branching model

a simple git branching model (written in 2013)

This is a very simple git workflow. It (and variants) is in use by many people. I settled on it after using it very effectively at Athena. GitHub does something similar; Zach Holman mentioned it in this talk.

Update: Woah, thanks for all the attention. Didn't expect this simple rant to get popular.
