Ultimate FreeNAS Setup

FreeNAS

I started using FreeNAS in August 2013. It is fantastic piece of software and I have been really impressed by the upgrades just in the few months I've been using it. It looks like they recently went to a plugin system as of version 9 to make installing software easier for end users. I've ran into several issues related to plugins and user + group permissions so I decided to just use the available FreeBSD port system. After fiddling for a few days (now turned into months) I believe I have created something helpful for the community and anyone interested in picking up the port system. The sandbox nature of FreeNAS's jail system is especially helpful for playing around without having any consequence on your core system.

Here are straight-forward instructions to setting up a bunch of different software on FreeNAS. If you make a terrible error, just throw up another plugin sandbox and repeat.

Steps to migrate from SVN to GitLab

Steps to migrate from SVN to GitLab

This process worked for me. I take no responsibility for any damage or loss incurred as a result of following or not following these steps or, for that matter, anything else you might do or not do.

Setup

  • SVN is hosted at svn.domain.com.au.
  • SVN is accessible via http (other protocols should work).
  • GitLab is hosted at git.domain.com.au and:

HTTP Live Streaming Tutorial

Note: This is an older post that I did back when I thought I might have time to be a blogger. Oh I was oh so wrong. However, it has proven useful for some folks on stackoverflow. Thus I'm keeping it alive here on Gist.

One of my past projects dealt heavily with an open source Apple technology called HTTP Live Streaming. It’s an HTTP based streaming protocol that at its most fundamental level provides a way to stream video and audio from just about any server with nothing but a few free software tools provided by Apple**. However, it has a few additional features that I think make it a really exciting tool. Yet, I haven’t seen HTTP Live Streaming used very much. This is probably mainly due to the combination of a lack of good/clear documentation, and Apple’s Live Streaming Developer Tools being command line based also make the barrier to entry higher than many developers want to deal with.

The hope is to share my understanding of how to use this technology to:

#Loading Tweaks in the Simulator

With the latest updates to the simulator, this turns out to be pretty simple:

You need to be using kirb/theos

In order not to require MobileSubstrate to be loaded and your tweak to be compiled for i386/x86_64, add

In your makefile:

Using iOS 15 devices with Xcode 12.5 (instead of Xcode 13)
# The trick is to link the DeviceSupport folder from the beta to the stable version.
# sudo needed if you run the Mac App Store version. Always download the dmg instead... you'll thank me later :)
# Support iOS 15 devices (Xcode 13.0) with Xcode 12.5:
sudo ln -s /Applications/Xcode-beta.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport/15.0 /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport
# Then restart Xcode and reconnect your devices. You will need to do that for every beta of future iOS versions
# (A similar approach works for older versions too, just change the version number after DeviceSupport)

Compile FFmpeg on Ubuntu 16.04

Compile FFmpeg on Ubuntu

This basic guide supports Ubuntu Xenial Xerus 16.04 and will enable several external encoding and decoding libraries: libfaac (AAC encoder), libfdk-aac (AAC encoder), libmp3lame (MP3 encoder), libopencore-amr (AMR encoder/decoder), librtmp (for additional RTMP protocols), libtheora (Theora encoder), libvorbis (Vorbis encoder), libvpx (VP8 encoder/decoder), and libx264 (H.264 encoder). These are optional and may be omitted if desired. This guide will also install many filters (see the filter list in the [Filtering Guide][1].

Note: Copy and paste the whole code box for each step.
