Weird pricing of Dropbox Pro

Last week Dropbox introduced Dropbox Pro with 1TB storage space (and some other cool features) for $99/year (or $9,99/month), which is a pretty good deal (Google Drive 1TB also costs $99,99/year). The problem: it's not $99/year, but $130/year (or $13/month) if you happen to live in Europe. Instead of converting prices from dollars to euros, they just changed $ to €.

pricing

But that's not the best part. You can buy it cheaper if you use Dropbox app on iOS.

pricing on iOS

Now it's only $118/year or $10/month, which is much cheaper than through their website (and they still have to give 30% of that to apple!). I guess we should thank apple for not allowing different pricing in different regions. So if you plan to upgrade to Dropbox Pro, do it through their mobile app.

This article was originally written for objc.io issue 12, but didn't make the cut. It was intended to be read in the context of the other articles, so if you aren't familiar with concepts such as CALayer property animations and the role of actionForKey:, read the articles in that issue first.

Hacking UIView animation blocks for fun and profit

In this article, I'm going to explore a way that we can create views that implement custom Core Animation property animations in a natural way.

As we know, layers in iOS come in two flavours: Backing layers and hosted layers. The only difference between them is that the view acts as the layer delegate for its backing layer, but not for any hosted sublayers.

In order to implement the UIView transactional animation blocks, UIView disables all animations by default and then re-enables them individually as required. It does this using the actionForLayer:forKey: method.

Somewhat strangely, UIView doesn't enable animations for every property that CALayer does by default. A notable example is the layer.contents property, which is animatable by default for a hosted layer, but cannot be animated using a UIView animation block.

Greetings, NSHipsters!

As we prepare to increment our NSDateComponents -year by 1, it's time once again for NSHipster end-of-the-year Reader Submissions! Last year, we got some mind-blowing tips and tricks. With the release of iOS 7 & Mavericks, and a year's worth of new developments in the Objective-C ecosystem, there should be a ton of new stuff to write up for this year.

Submit your favorite piece of Objective-C trivia, framework arcana, hidden Xcode feature, or anything else you think is cool, and you could have it featured in the year-end blowout article. Just comment on this gist below!

Here are a few examples of the kind of things I'd like to see:

  • Using NSStringFromSelector(@selector()) as a safer way to do KVC / KVO / NSCoding.
  • Panic's [rather surprising discovery about the internals of the Lightning Digital AV Adapter](http://www.panic.com/blog/the-lightning-di

A simple way to detect at runtime if we're running in UIKit legacy mode or the new "flat" variant. Written for our PDF iOS SDK (http://pspdfkit.com), where the precompiled binary needs to detect at runtime in what variant it's running. Want more stuff like that?
