The deferred font loading logic for Smashing Magazine. http://www.smashingmagazine.com/
<script type="text/javascript">
(function () {
"use strict";
// once cached, the css file is stored on the client forever unless
// the URL below is changed. Any change will invalidate the cache
var css_href = './index_files/web-fonts.css';
// a simple event handler wrapper
function on(el, ev, callback) {
if (el.addEventListener) {
el.addEventListener(ev, callback, false);

Comparing two ways to load non-critical CSS

I wanted to figure out the fastest way to load non-critical CSS so that the impact on initial page drawing is minimal.

TL;DR: Here's the solution I ended up with: https://github.com/filamentgroup/loadCSS/

For async JavaScript file requests, we have the async attribute to make this easy, but CSS file requests have no similar standard mechanism (at least, none that will still apply the CSS after loading - here are some async CSS loading conditions that do apply when CSS is inapplicable to media: https://gist.github.com/igrigorik/2935269#file-notes-md ).

Seems there are a couple ways to load and apply a CSS file in a non-blocking manner:

monitoring manifesto

monitoring: what I want

I've recently shifted from a straight engineering job to a job with a "dev/ops" title. What I have discovered in operations land depresses me. The shoemaker's children are going unshod. Operations software is terrible.

What's driving me craziest right now is my monitoring system.

what I have right now

What I have right now is Nagios.

An Alfred 2 workflow to let me jump directly to jsbin issues, either by issue number, searching issues or creating new issues. Make sure to change to your own repo. Also, disclaimer, I don't write or use ruby, so this is pretty much just clobbered together.
# change this...unless you're in to jsbin issues :)
repo = "remy/jsbin"
require 'cgi'
v = ARGV[0] || "{query}"
url = "";
text = "";
if v.to_s =~ /\A[-+]?\d*\.?\d+\z/ || v == "new"

Leveling-up on Node

Core Principals

  • Read lots of code.
  • Write lots of code.
  • Don’t be afraid to throw it away.
  • Don’t be afraid to share it.
  • Find your happy place writing tests.
    • You’ll probably spend more time writing tests and debugging than writing code. Embrace this. Make it a key part of your workflow.
    • Tests are one of the first things I read in a module. That and the example(s). Probably before API docs.
  • Don’t know where to start. Write some tests for a module you like. This benefits everyone.
// $node = node_load(123);
try {
$wrapper = entity_metadata_wrapper('node', $node);
$value = $wrapper->field_FIELDNAME->value();
}
catch (Exception $ex) {
watchdog_exception('watchdog_key', $ex);
}
