I thought it would be pertinent to respond to some points presented by Andrey "Rarst" Savchenko in recent post Progressive Enhancement.

Progressive Enhancement

Unlike Rarst, I don't value progressive enhancement very highly and don't agree it's a fundamental principle of the web that should be universally employed. Quite frankly, I don't care about not supporting JavaScript, and neither does virtually anyone else. It's not that it doesn't have any value, or utility - but in a world where we don't have unlimited resources and time, one has to prioritise what we'll support and not support.

I'm a proponent of putting my ideas and creations into the world for people to make use of; and if I had to cover 100% of use cases for doing that, I wouldn't put much out there. I'm fine with losing the 1.1% of

Ruby ISO8601 time in milliseconds

So you want to generate ISO8601 formatted timestamps in Ruby, but need resolution finer than a second?

First, make sure to require 'time' in order to get ISO8601 formatting. But that gets you this:

2.1.0 :001 > require 'time'
 => true
2.1.0 :002 > Time.now.utc.iso8601
 => "2015-11-12T04:46:43Z"

The stuff that matters.

Here's a list of setup stuff you need to do after firing up that fresh new Ubuntu Vagrant VM...

NOTE to everyone, this gist is just something written for my situation and some of the stuff may be irrelevant, useless, or might break stuff for you!

Commit, clone a container

To 'clone' a container, you'll have to make an image of that container first, you can do so by "committing" the container. Docker will (by default) pause all processes running in the container during commit to preserve data-consistency.

For example;

docker commit --message="Snapshot of my container" my_container my_container_snapshot:yymmdd

# The Roots theme by default does not check production assets into Git, so

HowTo: Add Custom Structural Blocks to a Layout

Overview

Recently had a client that wanted to customize the layout for a category landing page so that the category's title and description would be displayed above the layered navigation and product grid — essentially creating a full-width section above the left sidebar and main content areas.

NOTE: For reference, this is based off the blog post from Collaboration133.com's Magento - Add Custom Structural Block Reference.

Custom Module (My_LayoutMods)

I created a custom module to help organize and identify that there are some custom modifications to layout templates. Not saying you have to, but it may be easier for other's (or your future self) to recognize and find what customizations were done (and hopefully why).
