I've been a teacher for the past 7 years, so I'm very much out of practice with job searching/application/interviewing. In particular, cold outreach is something that is new to me and feels uncomfortable, so I'm looking for support in this realm. Clear tasks, deadlines, and a team dynamic motivate me, and I believe the mentorship program will provide that motivation. After spending so much time in one industry, I worry about how to best convey the many skills I bring from teaching/instructional coaching to an interviewer, so I'm hopeful to learn some strategies for this.
How will you hold yourself accountable to balancing time for your job search and following your mentor and group's advice?
I'm a big fan of Google Calendar, and time boxing/blocking has been helpful through my career. If I need to skip a block of job search time, I shift it to another day so I'm not losing out on that time. Our mod has shared public goals and will continue to check in on them. I've committed to at least 3 applications each week.
What is the focus of your job search (timeline, ideal job, steps you’ve already taken)? Be as specific as you can.
My focus is finding a job that is likely not a startup. I'm looking for a job that will give me plenty of room to grow, while maintaining a healthy work/life balance. I'd prefer to work in the Denver area.
I've done some warm outreach to friends in the area who have worked in the industry for 5+ years, applied to a few jobs in the Front Range, and have been reading Ian's tech interview e-mail tips.
I'd ideally find a job that aligns with my ideals around social justice and education, and that has been my primary focus in my job search.
