AWS redis-cli without redis server on AWS EC2

Setup redis-cli without the whole Redis Server on AWS EC2

This fast tutorial will teach you how to install redis-clion AWS EC2 without having to install the whole Redis Server. Firstly, SSH into your EC2 instance and run the following command:

$ sudo yum install gcc

This may return an "already installed" message, but that's OK. After that, just run:

$ wget http://download.redis.io/redis-stable.tar.gz && tar xvzf redis-stable.tar.gz && cd redis-stable && make && sudo cp src/redis-cli /usr/local/bin/ && sudo chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/redis-cli

Instructions for installing Python 3.5 using pyenv on Debian Jessie

Installing Python 3.5 on Debian Jessie with pyenv

Debian Jessie does not come with the correct Python version out of the box, and instead comes with Python 2. To be able to install Python 3(.5), we have a few options. We could build and install from source, but as per Debian's website, we shouldn't do this. Instead, we will use pyenv, a tool that allows users to switch Python versions easily without breaking their system.

Installing pyenv

To install pyenv, we will use the official installer.

curl -L https://raw.githubusercontent.com/yyuu/pyenv-installer/master/bin/pyenv-installer | bash

How to send containers log to ELK using gelf log driver

Send docker logs to ELK through gelf log driver

There's so many way to send logs to an elk... logspout, filebeat, journalbeat, etc.

But docker has a gelf log driver and logstash a gelf input. So here we are.

Here is a docker-compose to test a full elk with a container sending logs via gelf.

Download all of your Team's custom Slack emojis.
#!/bin/bash -eo pipefail
# Log in to Slack in a web browser and open the network tools to inspect the traffic.
# Filter the requests with "/api/" and pick one to inspect.
# You need the xoxc token from the request body, and a copy of the cookies. It is the "d" cookie that is important, but you can copy all of them. Make sure that the cookie value is percent encoded!
# Paste the values below.
# You need to have curl and jq installed.
# You can also get the xoxc token from localStorage. Run this in the JavaScript console:
# Object.entries(JSON.parse(localStorage.localConfig_v2)["teams"]).reduce((o,e) => Object.assign(o, { [e[1]["name"]]: e[1]["token"] }), {})

Use S3 and CloudFront to host Static Single Page Apps (SPAs) with HTTPs and www-redirects. Also covers deployments.

S3 Static Sites

⚠ This post is fairly old. I don't keep it up to date. Be sure to see comments where some people have posted updates

What this will cover

  • Host a static website at S3
  • Redirect www.website.com to website.com
  • Website can be an SPA (requiring all requests to return index.html)
  • Free AWS SSL certs
  • Deployment with CDN invalidation

The information below was written in Oct 2017. In August 2019 AWS launched official support for multiple target groups per AWS ECS service. Please use that feature instead!

Unfortunately as of writing this (Oct 18, 2017) there is no built in integration for multiple target groups per AWS ECS service. Here are a few things you can try:

  1. If your application just serves port 80 (HTTP) & port 443 (HTTPS) then you should consider using the application load balancer and terminating SSL at the load balancer. This will allow your application to function using just port 80.
