Summary of 'Clean code' by Robert C. Martin

Code is clean if it can be understood easily – by everyone on the team. Clean code can be read and enhanced by a developer other than its original author. With understandability comes readability, changeability, extensibility and maintainability.

General rules

  1. Follow standard conventions.
  2. Keep it simple stupid. Simpler is always better. Reduce complexity as much as possible.
  3. Boy scout rule. Leave the campground cleaner than you found it.
  4. Always find root cause. Always look for the root cause of a problem.

Design rules

Do not use forEach with async-await

Do not use forEach with async-await

TLDR: Use for...of instead of forEach() in asynchronous code.

For legacy browsers, use for...i or [].reduce()

To execute the promises in parallel, use Promise.all([].map(...))

How to Build a Fast Limit Order Book

The response to my first few posts has been much larger than I’d imagined and I’d like to thank everyone for the encouragement.

If you’re interested in building a trading system I recommend first reading my previous post on general ideas to keep in mind.

My first really technical post will be on how to build a limit order book, probably the single most important component of a trading system. Because the data structure chosen to represent the limit order book will be the primary source of market information for trading models, it is important to make it both absolutely correct and extremely fast.

To give some idea of the data volumes, the Nasdaq TotalView ITCH feed, which is every event in every instrument traded on the Nasdaq, can have data rates of 20+ gigabytes/day with spikes of 3 megabytes/second or more. The individual messages average about 20 bytes each so this means handling

Enable High Quality mode on your headphones (Updated for macOS Catalina)

If you're using a high-end bluetooth headset on your Macbook Pro it's likely your mac is using an audio codec which favors battery efficiency over high quality. This results in a drastic degradation of sound, the SBC codec is the likely culprit, read more about it here.

Find out what codec you're using

  1. Play a song on your headphones
  2. Option (⌥) click the Bluetooth button at the top of your screen Inspect the Bluetooth Coded
  3. If you're using AAC or aptX, you can stop here—those are the highest quality codecs.

Change your codec to AAC or aptX

Setting up your Virtual Machine

We'll be creating a new Virtual Machine on Microsoft's cloud platform, Azure. The VM will have a beefy GPU just like a home computer so it can be used for playing games.

  1. Go to [the Azure portal][azure] and sign up or log in.
  2. If you are on a Free account, first go to Subscriptions and upgrade it to a Pay-as-you-go plan. Don't worry, you will get to keep any free credits you have. Azure's interface is a bit slow so this will take a minute.

⚠️ Make sure to not include any support plan because they will charge you monthly!

How to setup iCloud+ Custom Domain Catch All email with Gmail

I've recently tested on how to move the custom domain catch all email from G Suite to the new iCloud+ Catch All feature and wanted to share my experience.

The end result is having Custom Domain email and Catch All routing, that can be fully used via Gmail, including receiving and sending emails.

The steps

  • Setup your Custom Domain (or subdomain) with iCloud+
