This is our current Travis configuration for our standard Rails 4 + Ruby 2 projects that have Capybara Webkit test suites and Postgres databases. It relies on the bundle_cache.rb and bundle_install.sh files from http://randomerrata.com/post/45827813818/travis-s3 to cache gem bundles for much faster test suite setup time.

In order to use asset pipeline available for static error pages (like 404.html), a few steps are required

  • Move static pages from /public into /app/assets

    (eg: public/422.html → app/assets/html/422.html.erb)

  • Add html directory to the asset pipeline

  • Update exceptions middleware to understand assets with digests

Ruby 2.1.0 in Production: known bugs and patches
Last week, we upgraded the github.com rails app to ruby 2.1.0 in production.
While testing the new build for rollout, we ran into a number of bugs. Most of
these have been fixed on trunk already, but I've documented them below to help
anyone else who might be testing ruby 2.1 in production.
@naruse I think we should backport these patches to the ruby_2_1 branch and
release 2.1.1 sooner rather than later, as some of the bugs are quite critical.
I'm happy to offer any assistance I can to expedite this process.

Precompile assets locally but keep the manifest files in source control

This setup will allow you to precompile assets locally and keep them separated depending on the environment. To precompile assets locally run RAILS_ENV=production COMPILE_ASSETS=1 rake assets:precompile. Using an ENV var like this removes the need for having therubyracer or some other javascript engine on your server instances since they aren't actually running the precompilation task.

Send OpsWorks log files to Papertrail using the remote_syslog gem
  1. Add remote_syslog to your Gemfile
  2. Add papertrail.rake to lib/tasks
  3. Add remote_syslog.yml to config/
  4. Add before_restart.rb to deploy/
  5. Set the PAPERTRAIL_PORT ENV var to the one provided by Papertrail for your system

Liberal, Accurate Regex Pattern for Matching Web URLs
The regex patterns in this gist are intended only to match web URLs -- http,
https, and naked domains like "example.com". For a pattern that attempts to
match all URLs, regardless of protocol, see: https://gist.github.com/gruber/249502
