After reading Code Climate's Rails' Insecure Defaults I realized I was guilty of breaking rule 3. Versioned Secret Tokens. Here's how I fixed it.
Use dotenv in development and test environments:
# Gemfile
gem 'dotenv-rails', groups: [:development, :test]| # This is a skeleton for testing models including examples of validations, callbacks, | |
| # scopes, instance & class methods, associations, and more. | |
| # Pick and choose what you want, as all models don't NEED to be tested at this depth. | |
| # | |
| # I'm always eager to hear new tips & suggestions as I'm still new to testing, | |
| # so if you have any, please share! | |

| # This skeleton also assumes you're using the following gems: |
| # NullStorage provider for CarrierWave for use in tests. Doesn't actually | |
| # upload or store files but allows test to pass as if files were stored and | |
| # the use of fixtures. | |
