Quick-and-dirty Instagram web scrape, just in case you don't think you should have to make your users log in to deliver them public photos.
<?php
//returns a big old hunk of JSON from a non-private IG account page.
function scrape_insta($username) {
$insta_source = file_get_contents('http://instagram.com/'.$username);
$shards = explode('window._sharedData = ', $insta_source);
$insta_json = explode(';</script>', $shards[1]);
$insta_array = json_decode($insta_json[0], TRUE);
return $insta_array;
}

Kindleberry "Paperwhite" Pi

Work in progress, I'll write this up properly when I'm done.

Almost all credit goes to @maxogden for putting me on to this and pointing me in the right direction for each of these items.

Prerequisites:

  • Raspberry Pi
  • Kindle Paperwhite freed from its locked down state (jailbroken) http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=198446
    • You have to downgrade your Kindle to 5.3.1 to install the current jailbreak; that's just a matter of getting the old version image, putting it on your Kindle via USB and telling it to install "upgrade". Then you put in the Jailbreak files, load the ebook and break.
  • Your kindle will be quick to detect an upgrade is available so it'll want to upgrade soon afterwards but the jailbreak will last but you have to reinstall the developer certificates so it's a bit of a pain but doable. Find all the instructions on the mobileread.com forums and wiki.

volsay: Wrapper around OSX's `say' command, which sets the system volume to the requested level, then restores volume / mute state once speech is complete.
#!/bin/bash
function usage() {
echo "usage: $0 <volume (0-100)> <say args...>"
echo
echo "Unmutes and sets the system volume to volume%, passing the remaining"
echo "arguments to the OSX \`say' command, restoring volume / mute setting"
echo "to previous values after the speech has completed."
exit 1
}

Send Pronto Hex via an IR LED connected to Arduino Pin D9. Make sure you do not send a blank (" ") as the last character. Applied fix for Leonardo from https://github.com/probonopd/arduino-infrared-pronto/pull/1 to sendandreceive.ino -- TODO: Fix sendRaw to specify length as "sizeof(signal)/sizeof(int)" as in http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?PH…

// change in IRremoteInt.h:
// #define _GAP 50000
int RECV_PIN = 8;
IRrecv irrecv(RECV_PIN);
decode_results results;

Script to download & install XCode Command Line tools on OSX 10.7 or 10.8. Lifted from jedi4ever/veewee template.

# This script is no longer supported!
# Apple broke all direct downloads without logging with an Apple ID first.
# The number of hoops that a script would need to jump through to login,
# store cookies, and download is prohibitive.
# Now we all must manually download and mirror the files for this to work at all :'-(
