Using GitHub inside a company

I'm doing some research on how companies use GitHub Enterprise (or public GitHub) internally. If you can help out by answering a few questions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

  1. What is the primary setup? Is there an organization and each official repo is owned by that organization?
  2. Does every engineer have a fork of each repo they're working on?
  3. Are engineers allowed to push directly to the official repo? Or must all commits go through a pull request?
  4. Do engineers work on feature branches on the main repo or on their own forks?
  5. Do you require engineers to squash commits and rebase before merging?
  6. Overall, what is the workflow for getting a new commit into the main repository?
  7. What sort of hooks do you make use of?
  8. Are there any ops issues you encountered? (Scaling, unforeseen downtime, etc.)

Keep and SSH tunnel up and running on OSX

This is my trick to keep a tunnel running on an OSX host. It's setup so that a network state change will trigger the connection. In practice I've found that it's actually very reliable. Certainly beats starting them by hand.

Notes

  • This uses a 'tunnel' user on your remote host. Because we need to start the tunnel with a passwordless ssh key, it's safer to use a key that just used for this purpose.
  • The remote tunnel user should not have priviledges to login. You only need them to be able to forward ports, shell login is not needed to do this.

Node.js Resources

What is node.js?

Node.js is just JavaScript running on the server side. That's it. That's all there is to it.

Express

  • Express Docs, if you want to get started and already know JavaScript this is the place to be

A Bloom Filter in Redis

This is a really simple implementation of a bloom filter using Redis 2.6's lua scripting facility.

Though it "works", it's just a proof of concept. The choice and implementation of hashing functions leave something to be desired (I'm sure it's a fine implementation of CRC32 that I borrowed, but it's in pure lua, and, well, CRC32 is not the best function to use for a bloom filter).

Caveat Emptor, no refunds, etc. MIT License.
