Rewriting history with predicates (Reactive 2015 lightning talk proposal)

This is a proposal for a lightning talk I would give at the Reactive 2015 conference.

NOTE: If you like it, put a star ⭐ on it—the number of stars decides if it makes the cut!

Rewriting history with predicates

Redux provides a simple pattern for managing application state. As demonstrated in Dan Abramov's talk following this pattern lets you painlessly implement simple undo and time travel. By keeping a history of actions, and reducing a subset

Super-simple Nginx reverse proxy with Homebrew on OS X

Installation

1)

brew install nginx
sudo cp /usr/local/Cellar/nginx/1.8.0/homebrew.mxcl.nginx.plist /Library/LaunchAgents

2)

Replace /usr/local/etc/nginx/nginx.conf with the nginx.conf in this gist. I'm using port 5000 for my current project. Obviously, change server_name as well, and probably the name of its access log.

A really simple Caesar Cipher in Bash (or Shell) using `tr`, can also easily be adjusted to encrypt/decrypt ROT13 instead.
# Caesar cipher encoding
echo "THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS OVER THE LAZY DOG" | tr '[A-Z]' '[X-ZA-W]'
# output: QEB NRFZH YOLTK CLU GRJMP LSBO QEB IXWV ALD
# Caesar cipher decoding
echo "QEB NRFZH YOLTK CLU GRJMP LSBO QEB IXWV ALD" | tr '[X-ZA-W]' '[A-Z]'
# output: THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS OVER THE LAZY DOG
# Can also be adjusted to ROT13 instead

How to make a private Gist public

Github provides no facility to do this via the UI. This is sad, because it would be extremely useful in order to draft something before publishing it. It would also be trivial for them to implement. Never mind; here's how to do it manually:

  1. Get the "Clone this Gist" text from the left-hand side of the private Gist, e.g. https://gist.github.com/b9cc265982870c091a1e.git, and extract the ID b9cc265982870c091a1e.
  2. Go to https://gist.github.com/ and create a dummy new public Gist.
  3. Get the "Clone this Gist" text from the left-hand side, e.g. https://gist.github.com/8270253.git, and extract the ID 8270253.
  4. git clone git@gist.github.com:b9cc265982870c091a1e tmp-dir && cd tmp-dir && git push -f git@gist.github.com:8270253.git

A better ruby syntax highlighter for sublime text. Combines the ruby bundle with ST, recent updates to the textmate bundle, and a tmLanguage file called "Experimental Ruby".
