history of templating changes in Magic: The Gathering

This is a detailed history of templating changes in Magic: The Gathering. Not included are nonstandard templates used for promotional purposes, such as the Masterpiece Series.

Limited Edition Alpha

  • As the first Magic set, Alpha introduces the first few templating conventions.
    • In this set, each frame has its own unique design despite sharing an overall layout. The frames appearing in this set are one for each color (white, blue, black, red, and green), a frame for artifacts, and a frame for basic lands with a variation for dual lands featuring a striped text box.

Unlimited Edition

  • This is the first set to use white borders to denote that it is a reprint set.

Lore Seeker changelog

This changelog is intended to provide users of Lore Seeker, including the website and the Discord bot (but not the desktop app, which has its own changelog), with a high-level overview of new features over time, as well as fixes of long-standing bugs. For the low-level details, please see the commit logs in the respective repositories. Some notable changes that are not included here are new official sets, updates of custom sets, and new rulings for custom cards.

A new entry will be added to this changelog for each Lore Seeker update, with entries from 2019 and earlier being summaries of all updates made that month.

  • Custom set updates, including card name changes, are now automatically applied to custom preconstructed decks.

  • Enabled the Ancestral generic mana setting on all cards. This updates the generic mana symbols to those used since 8th Edition.

  • Fixed some flavor bar offsets.
  • Removed spaces after the text of Chthonic Wastemaker; Drelum, Deepheart Seer; and Theren, Azelduum Regent and instead used the chop options to avoid overlap with the P/T box and holofoil stamp.
  • Merged shuffle effect into the search effect's sentence on Ashkal, Civilization's Cradle; Gateway Guardian; Nezadar Sacrament; Seek the Mysterious; Seeker of Lost Lore; and Shape Reality.
