Creating a React App

1. In the terminal run: npx create-react-app NAME-OF-APP
2. Cd into the new directory: cd NAME-OF-APP
3. Run: npm install.
4. You can run npm start to see if the app was set up correctly.

What's Cookin' or What's That Smell?!

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to create a recipe website that would allow users to view recipes, favorites, view the items in their pantry, and add recipes they'd like to cook. Extensions of the project would present the differences between a recipe and pantry, show the price of a recipe, and how much it would cost to get missing ingredients.

• I typically try to ensure we have a good outline and plan from the beginning. I also really enjoy doing the design and styling of the UI.

I am a professionally trained classical musician turned developer. My training gives me several strengths including time management, organized, and the ability to be both independent and a team player. I found putting financial pressure on music no longer made it something I could be passionate about, which is what prompted searching for another career.

I came to Turing after spending 5 years in IT support, and 2 years in data management. This gave me an opportunity to dabble in many areas of IT from operations to networking to developemnt. I found that working along side developers was exciting and interesting. There is always a new problem to solve or concept to learn, which keeps things interesting and engaging. I also like the potential to help someone do what they need to do in a more efficient manner. My past experience gave me the knowledge to figure out what I want to do and what that environment might look like.

What role does empathy play in your life and how has it helped you?

• Empathy plays a very large role in my life. Whether personal relationships or professional relationships, taking the time to look at things from another person's side gives you insight not only into how they may be feeling, but also why they feel that way. Empathy has helped me see how my own actions can be troublesome for others, even something as simple as not cleaning the dishes in the sink. This has helped me to not only understand others better, but to understand myself and how I can become a better person.

How does empathy help you build better software?

• Empathy helps you build software by identifying problems and proposing solutions. Software should have a purpose, so we have to know what that purpose is. The best way I feel to find this purpose and solve a problem is by talking to the people who will be or are currently using the software. By walking through the application in their shoes, you can see where they may have strugg

What is your greatest strength and how do you know?

• My greatest strength is my adaptability. I can be a leader or a follower, I can take direction or give creative ideas. I find new challenges and solving puzzles fun, which has made it is for me to change to whatever environemnt or task I go up against. I also know how to adapt to not being in charge. Some of this I got out of doing improv comedy. You don't always have the best ideas, but someone else might! At the end of the day, what is important is that the group succeeds.

How do you work best?

• I work best in a group of individuals. What I mean is, as a group we decide what is needed, then split off to work on our own parts of the project. If anyone has a problem or question, we all give input, but for the most part work is completed individually. I think this lends well to a career in programming and web development as there are lots of times that you will be on your own just plugging away at what you are coding.
