Make soffice command of Libreoffice work on Mac OS X

Deprecated Notice

This script, originally created on April 29, 2015, addressed a different behavior of LibreOffice installation on macOS at that time. However, it is now outdated and no longer relevant. Please refer to the latest comments for updated information, as much has changed over the past 8–9 years.

Quick Start

sudo curl https://gist.githubusercontent.com/pankaj28843/3ad78df6290b5ba931c1/raw/soffice.sh > /usr/local/bin/soffice && sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/soffice

Migrating a Rails project from MySQL to PostgreSQL

Migrating a Rails project from MySQL to PostgreSQL

This brief guide is written from my own experience with migrating a large (~5GB) MySQL database to PostgreSQL for a Rails project.

No warranties, guarantees, support etc. Use at your own risk and, as always, ENSURE YOU MAKE BACKUPS FIRST!

I chose [pgloader][1] because it's extremely fast. YMMV.

  1. Replace mysql2 gem with pg in Gemfile.
  2. Update config/database.yml for PostgreSQL. I used [Rails' template][2] as a starting point.

Ruby memory analysis over time

Finding a Ruby memory leak using a time analysis

When developing a program in Ruby, you may sometimes encounter a memory leak. For a while now, Ruby has a facility to gather information about what objects are laying around: ObjectSpace.

There are several approaches one can take to debug a leak. This discusses a time-based approach, where a full memory dump is generated every, say, 5 minutes, during a time that the memory leak is showing up. Afterwards, one can look at all the objects, and find out which ones are staying around, causing the

Multiple MySQL Versions with Homebrew

Multiple MySQL Versions for Development

Options included below:

  • Using Docker docker-compose
  • Using Homebrew brew

Using Docker (recommended)

This gist was originally created for Homebrew before the rise of Docker, yet it may be best to avoid installing mysql via brew any longer. Instead consider adding a barebones docker-compose.yml for each project and run docker-compose up to start each project's mysql service.
