Terraform, CoreOS, and Digital Ocean

Let's use Terraform to easily get a CoreOS cluster up on Digital Ocean. In this example we will get a 5 node CoreOS cluster up and running on the Digital Ocean 8GB size.

Install Terraform

Grab a copy of Terraform for your platform from http://www.terraform.io/downloads.html. Follow the instructions at http://www.terraform.io/intro/getting-started/install.html by getting Terraform in your PATH and testing that it works.

Directory structure for JavaScript/Node Projects

While the following structure is not an absolute requirement or enforced by the tools, it is a recommendation based on what the JavaScript and in particular Node community at large have been following by convention.

Beyond a suggested structure, no tooling recommendations, or sub-module structure is outlined here.

Directories

lib/ is intended for code that can run as-is
src/ is intended for code that needs to be manipulated before it can be used

$ npm install
$ ./node_modules/.bin/webpack-dev-server
$ open http://localhost:8080/webpack-dev-server/

Notes:

Note the trailing slash on the URL is significant. Without it webpack-dev-server shows a file listing page.
You need 1.0.11 or later of webpack-dev-middleware for this URL to work. With earlier versions you need to specify the full URL like this: http://localhost:8080/webpack-dev-server/index.html.
To get a non-autoreloading version of the page use http://localhost:8080/index.html.

To remove a submodule you need to:

Delete the relevant section from the .gitmodules file.
Stage the .gitmodules changes git add .gitmodules
Delete the relevant section from .git/config.
Run git rm --cached path_to_submodule (no trailing slash).
Run rm -rf .git/modules/path_to_submodule (no trailing slash).
Commit git commit -m "Removed submodule "
Delete the now untracked submodule files rm -rf path_to_submodule
