Random Aww

Description

Dashing widget to display a random cute picture from http://reddit.com/r/aww

The display of the widget is heavily based on the Image widget, however it does not prepend the src with 'assets' which allows for external images.

Settings

You can set a placeholder image in the event that reddit is down, or otherwise unresponse. This is set at the top of random_aww.rb as follows:

Took a little inspiration from the News widget to construct this Reddit widget. Simply add the subreddit .json feed URLs that you want to the top of the reddit.rb job script, and the widget will cycle through each one, showing top posts, their score, and comment count. Setting up a Raspberry Pi as a dashboard server with Dashing

Setting up a Raspberry Pi as a dashboard server with Dashing

Why the heck did I do this?

I wanted to set up one of my Raspberry Pi's as a data dashboard, pushing sensor data to a web interface that's easy to digest. I decided to use Shopify's Dashing framework. Dashing is based on Sinatra, and is pretty lightweight.

Dashing does require Ruby 1.9.3 to run. In addition, it makes use of the execjs gem, which needs to have a working Javascript interpreter available. Originally, I tried to get therubyracer working, but decided to switch over to Node.js when I ran into roadblocks compiling V8.

One warning: The RPi is a very slow system compared with modern multi-core x86-style systems. It's pretty robust, but compiling all this complex software taxes the system quite a bit. Expect that it's going to take at least half a day to get everything going.

Dashing News Ticker Widget

##Description A Dashing widget that overlays a scrolling news ticker on the bottom of your Dashboard.

This widget is a little different, in that it doesn't occupy a typical space in the Dashing grid, but instead overlays the bottom of the dashboard. If it doesn't have any data, it will be hidden. If you send it an array of Strings, it will scroll through them either vertically or horizontally. Our office uses it on our dashboards to occasionally flash important notices or reminders in an eye catching fashion, most of the time it is not displayed.

See http://widget-challenge.herokuapp.com/vertical-ticker and http://widget-challenge.herokuapp.com/horizontal-ticker for a live demo.

Remote-reload widget for Dashing

So, you made a change to your dashboard, and now you have to run all over the building, plugging in a keyboard, and reloading the dashboard on the various TVs in your office. What if you could reload all the dashboard from the comfort of your desk?

Add this widget to the very bottom of your dashboard, after the "gridster" div:

<div class="gridster">
  <ul>
    <li data-row="1" data-col="1" data-sizex="1" data-sizey="1">
      <div data-view="Image" data-image="/benbria/loop.png" style="background-color:#666766"></div>
    </li>

CSS3 Transitions for Dashing Dashboards

Flying Widgets adds CSS3 transitions to your dashboard, allowing you to cycle through multiple widget sets on a single TV without page reloads, using stylish CSS3 transitions. You can even still re-order your widgets and save their locations!

Note that sinatra-cyclist is a potential alternative if the machine you use to display your dashboards is lacking in graphics horsepower.

To use, put this file in assets/javascripts/cycleDashboard.coffee. Then find this line in application.coffee:

    $('.gridster ul:first').gridster

Progress Bars - An animated progress bar widget for Dashing.

Progress Bar Widget

Description

A widget made for Dashing. This widget shows multiple animated progress bars and reacts dynamically to new information being passed in. Anything with a current state and with a projected max/goal state can easily be represented with this widget. Some sample ideas would be to show progress, completion, capacity, load, fundraising, and much more.

Features

  • Animating progress bars - Both the number and bar will grow or shrink based on new data that is being passed to it.
  • Responsive Design - Allows the widget to be resized to any height or width and still fit appropriately. The progress bars will split up all available space amongst each other, squeezing in when additional progress bars fill the widget.
