My notes for preaching on Fellowship as a Core Value of Compass Point Church in February 2013.

Fellowship

##1) What is Fellowship?

###A. Fellowship = κοινωνία (Greek "koinonia"): Having a share, giving a share; also, communion;

  • The idea of κοινωνία alludes to a mutual benefit and mutual responsibility.
  • Fellowship is far more than mingling at Church and having casual conversation with others. It refers to the idea of being intimately involved in the lives of those you are in fellowship with. Shared fears, shared joys, shared sufferings, shared victories.

Sermon manuscript for my message on Fellowship

Fellowship

##(Introduction)

If I were to ask you today, "what is fellowship?" my guess is there would be a lot of answers. Is fellowship a potluck dinner after church? Is fellowship coming to church early and staying late so you can talk with other church members? Is fellowship is having breakfast and studying the Bible? (like we do on Wednesday morning at Brothers- little plug...). Is fellowship is just casual conversation over a cup of coffee at Starbucks?

So what is fellowship exactly? Well we're going to talk about that for a few minutes, but first let me share with you why fellowship is an especially meaningful part of the Christian walk for me.

I grew up as an only child. My brother and sister are literally decades older than me, and lived several states away my whole life, and same with most of the rest of my family - on both sides my family is scattered all over the US.

A suggested style guide for composing easy to read scss files.

My SCSS Style Guide

One of the beauties of authoring code is that apart from basic syntax rules, formatting is flexible. But we all know there are best practices for helping make certain code more readable, and more friendly for collaborator environments.

Here's a suggested style guide for authoring SASS files (SCSS flavor specifically) based on my own personal experience. You may like what I've come up with (then use it), or you may not like it (then fork it). Either way I hope it gets you to think more critically about how formatting your code can lead to efficiency for yourself, and for your team.

Walking by the Spirit vs Walking by the Flesh

Galatians 5:16-18 (1)

Intro

  • A story - "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak"
    • Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane with the disciples, praying vs falling asleep
    • wanting to getup and exercise vs staying in bed to sleep
    • wanting to spend time reading the Word vs just getting started with my work

1. Galatians 5:16-18 TURN THERE

(ESV) 16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

(NKJV) 16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

2. Galatians 2:20 TURN THERE

Migraine Notes

So it's been quite a while since I've had a migraine, something like 4+ weeks, and I've had several triggers that should have given me one. So I'm trying to track with some of the differences in my life/diet since I've last had a migraine.

Some things that have changed:

  • Coconut Water - I've been drinking coconut water almost every day since I've last had a migraine, so I'm wondering if somethign about the coconut water is preventing headaches?
  • Nike Air Max 2013 - I got some brand new Air Max shoes shortly after my last headache, and walking in them is like walking on matresses. I'm wondering if maybe something about wearing such high quality shoes may be keeping my body in better alignment and preventing headaches that way?
  • No Milk - I cut milk out of my diet around the time of my last headache as part of a new diet (which other than cutting out milk as a drink I've been very inconsistent keeping to the diet). So I'm wondering if cutting out milk has helped stave of th

Thoughts on the stuff of life.

God is Ultimate

I very much enjoy the stuff of life: my family, my work, eating and drinking, hobbies and creative pursuits, and yeah even material things. And that is completely okay with God - in fact it's what he intends. What He doesn't intend is for any of those things to become ultimate in our lives.

God gives us everything we enjoy with the hope and intent that as those things create joy and thanksgiving in our hearts, that joy would not simply terminate on those things as though those things in and of themselves are ultimate. But that instead the joy that they create in our hearts would point us beyond those things to God who gives them to us to enjoy, and end up creating joy and affection in our hearts for God.

All those things are wonderful, but they all have an end. They are not intended to be the ultimate source of joy in our lives, they are merely intended to point us to the One who is the ultimate source of joy and life: God.
