operational pgp - draft

Operational PGP

This is a guide on how to email securely.

There are many guides on how to install and use PGP to encrypt email. This is not one of them. This is a guide on secure communication using email with PGP encryption. If you are not familiar with PGP, please read another guide first. If you are comfortable using PGP to encrypt and decrypt emails, this guide will raise your security to the next level.

I wrote this in early January 2012, but never finished it. The research and thinking in this area led to a lot of the design of Yeoman and talks like "Javascript Development Workflow of 2013", "Web Application Development Workflow" and "App development stack for JS developers" (surpisingly little overlap in those talks, btw).

Now it's June 2013 and the state of web app tooling has matured quite a bit. But here's a snapshot of the story from 18 months ago, even if a little ugly and incomplete. :p

In the beginning…

macOS FileVault encryption and OpenBSD encrypted softraid on a Macbook Air/Pro

Update (2019-05-06): The Broadcom wireless card in the MacBook Pro works and can be crammed into the Air.

Update (2015-12-04): This document used to be very lengthy as there were many manual steps required to get OpenBSD and Mac OS X working together through Boot Camp Assistant (BCA), which created a hybrid MBR and enabled a legacy BIOS emulation mode which older versions of Windows (and OpenBSD) required. Newer Macbooks stopped supporting older versions of Windows through BCA and now only support Windows 10 since it uses GPT and UEFI. However, now that newer versions of OpenBSD support GPT and UEFI, Boot Camp Assistant is no longer needed at all to boot OpenBSD.

OpenBSD works pretty well on at least the Mid-2011 Macbook Air (A1370, SandyBridge) and Mid-2013 Macbook Air (Haswell). The new KMS code in 5.4 brings up the MBA's eDP display in 1366x768 with backlight

So yesterday brought the sad news that Google Reader is being killed off. C’est la vie it seems, given it was a Google product. In my search for an alternative I rediscovered Fever and decided to see if I could run it up for free on Heroku. Onwards...

Personally I think the news about Reeder is quite sad, as I would quite happily have paid for it as a service. In fact I like RSS so much that I actually shelled out the $30 for Fever when it first came out years ago (I was also pretty massive Shaun Inman fanboy if I’m being honest).

I ended up setting Fever aside because screw having to manage self-hosting for PHP and MySQL, right?

If you’re new to Fever I recommend going and checking it out, but also reading the post in response to the Google Reader announcement by Fevers author, Shaun, for a good list of what Fever is and isn’t.

Enough jibba-jabba!

This grabs URLs associated with the people you follow on Twitter and then tries to scrape RSS feeds from the URLs. You have to get OAUTH creds from dev.twitter.com/apps to do this, and then register the script so that you get the access_token + access_token_secret. Rev 2 actually produces valid OPML. ;)
