2015-01-29 Unofficial Relay FAQ

Compilation of questions and answers about Relay from React.js Conf.

Disclaimer: I work on Relay at Facebook. Relay is a complex system on which we're iterating aggressively. I'll do my best here to provide accurate, useful answers, but the details are subject to change. I may also be wrong. Feedback and additional questions are welcome.

What is Relay?

Relay is a new framework from Facebook that provides data-fetching functionality for React applications. It was announced at React.js Conf (January 2015).

Creating a Swift-ReactNative project

Settings

  1. Create a project in XCode with the default settings
    • iOS > Application > Single View Application
    • Language: Swift
  2. Under project General settings, add ReactKit to Linked Framework and Libraries
    • + > Add Other... and choose /path/to/react-native/ReactKit/ReactKit.xcodeproj
  3. Now ReactKit would have been imported. Link it by choosing it from the list.
    • + > lib.ReactKit.a
  4. Under project Build Settings,

Why my F# projects don't use RavenDB, or the cost of the esoteric choice

As you know, I generally recommend using SqlServer for data storage.

But many people have suggested that using RavenDB rather than SqlServer would dramatically reduce the development effort.

My reply to that was that using RavenDB would also lead to a lot more complexity, reduced support by other teams, harder to find DBAs and increased costs all around.

Functional acrobatics using folds in JavaScript.
/*eslint-env es6 */
// Inspired by the paper "A tutorial on the universality and
// expressiveness of fold" by Graham Hutton (available at
// http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~gmh/fold.pdf), implementing some generic
// list handling functions in JavaScript in terms of `fold`.
// Personally I had an enlightnening moment when I realised the
// beautiful interplay of cons lists and foldr during the FP101x
// Haskell course. JavaScript's syntax doesn't make this very apparent
// make a "base" component
const FakeButton = (props) => (
<div
{...props}
style={{
cursor: 'default',
border: '1px solid',
borderRadius: '3px',
...props.style
}}
'use strict';
var React = require('react-native');
var _ = require('underscore');
var { ActivityIndicatorIOS, Text, Navigator, TouchableHighlight, AppRegistry, ListView, View, StyleSheet } = React;
var StarWarsApp = React.createClass({
render() {
return (
This is almost certainly the wrong approach. I wanted to try and get CoreAnimation-based
animations working because they should be the smoothest and most performant, but I think
there are too many limitations. Most notably, it can't update layout properties like
left/top. I think a better approach would be to make a custom animation runner, similar
to POP, that drives the animations from native by manually updating the properties,
potentially on the shadow views to trigger layout updates.
