Sorry, RSA, I'm just not buying it

Sorry, RSA, I'm just not buying it

I want to be extremely clear about three things. First, this is my personal opinion – insert full standard disclaimer. Second, this is not a condemnation of everyone at RSA, present and past. I assume most of them are pretty okay, and that the problem is confined to a few specific points in the company. However, “unknown problem people making major decisions at RSA” is a bit unwieldy, so I will just say RSA. Third, I'm not calling for a total boycott on RSA. I work almost literally across the street from them and I don’t want to get beat up by roving gangs of cryptographers at the local Chipotle.

RSA's denial published last night is utter codswallop that denies pretty much everything in the world except the actual allegations put forth by Reuters and hinted at for months by [other sources](http://li

Naming this in nested functions

tl;dr

If you must nest functions in a way that requires access to multiple this', alias outer this to something meaningful - describe the value it's holding. Treat this as the invisible first argument.

In general though, avoiding the situation (nested functions and frivolous use of this) will frequently produce clearer results.

Naming this in nested functions

I was accidentally included in a discussion on how to best name this in nested functions in JavaScript. +1's were given to this suggestion of using _this.

Giving style advice on naming nested this without a meaningful context isn't too helpful in my opinion. Examples below have been altered to have at least some context, although a completely contrived and stupid one.

Using synonyms in Elasticsearch

We create an index with:

  • two filters: synonyms_expand and synonyms_contract
  • two analyzers: synonyms_expand and synonyms_contract
  • three text fields:
    • text_1 uses the synonyms_expand analyzer at index and search time
    • text_2 uses the synonyms_expand analyzer at index time, but the standard analyzer at search time
    • text_3 uses the synonyms_contract analyzer at index and search time
