Mysqldump from Docker container

Mysqldump from Docker container

docker exec -i mysql_container mysqldump -uroot -proot --databases database_name --skip-comments > /path/to/my/dump.sql

OBS

  • This will generate a dump.sql file in your host machine. Awesome, eh?
  • Avoid using --compact on your dump. This will make MySQL check your constraints which will cause troubles when reading your file (damm you MySQL). And don't use --force to fix this scenario: recreate your dump without --compact ยฏ_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

Terraform to manage AWS RDS PostgreSQL databases, users and owners

Terraform vs PostgreSQL RDS

Thanks to new resources (postgresql_default_priviledges) and some fixes Terraform can now add new databases and manage ownership / access to them.

This example creates new database and two users. You can use owner to create new tables and run migrations and user for normal read/write access to database.

Retrieving Docker Image Sizes

Retrieving Docker Image Sizes

There are two metrics that are important to consider when discussing the size of Docker images.

  1. Compressed size - This is often referred to as the wire size. This affects how fast/slow images can be pulled from a registry. This impacts the first run experience on machines where images are not cached.
  2. Uncompressed size - This is often referred to as the size on disk. This affects how much local storage is required to support your Docker workloads.

The example commands shown below will work on Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

How to Measure the Compressed Size
