Get title from remote HTML URL - without jQuery
// Only using native browser features (no jQuery).
// Uses `fetch`, `DOMParser` and `querySelectorAll`.
const getTitle = (url) => {
return fetch(`https://crossorigin.me/${url}`)
.then((response) => response.text())
.then((html) => {
const doc = new DOMParser().parseFromString(html, "text/html");
const title = doc.querySelectorAll('title')[0];
return title.innerText;

Git HowTo: revert a commit already pushed to a remote repository

Revert the full commit

Sometimes you may want to undo a whole commit with all changes. Instead of going through all the changes manually, you can simply tell git to revert a commit, which does not even have to be the last one. Reverting a commit means to create a new commit that undoes all changes that were made in the bad commit. Just like above, the bad commit remains there, but it no longer affects the the current master and any future commits on top of it.

git revert {commit_id}

About History Rewriting

Delete the last commit

Deleting the last commit is the easiest case. Let's say we have a remote origin with branch master that currently points to commit dd61ab32. We want to remove the top commit. Translated to git terminology, we want to force the master branch of the origin remote repository to the parent of dd61ab32:

Elm in Node (0.17)

Elm in Node (0.17)

Why?

Sharing code between the client and the server in a Universal Javascript application is a big gain. No more are the days of rewriting code for the server.

But moving from Javascript to Elm in the front end can feel like a move backwards. So much of the code we write is environment independent. And it would be great if we could leverage some of the front end logic on the backend.

How?

vim/neovim configuration

I recently switched over to neovim (see my screenshots at the bottom). Below is my updated config file.

It's currently synchronized with my .vimrc config except for a block of neovim-specific terminal key mappings.

This is still a work in progress (everyone's own config is always a labor of love), but I'm already extremely pleased with how well this is working for me with neovim. While terminal mode isn't enough to make me stop using tmux, it is quite good and I like having it since it simplifies my documentation workflow for yanking terminal output to paste in a markdown buffer.

These days I primarily develop in Go. I'm super thrilled and grateful for fatih/vim-go,

A set of instructions on how to fix the harfbuzz + Infinality issue and restoring good-looking, Infinality-like font rendering.

Disclaimer: Please follow this guide being aware of the fact that I'm not an expert regarding the things outlined below, however I made my best attempt. A few people in IRC confirmed it worked for them and the results looked acceptable.

Attention: After following all the steps run gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache as root, this prevents various gdk-related bugs that have been reported in the last few hours. Symptoms are varied, and for Cinnamon the DE fails to start entirely while for XFCE the icon theme seemingly can't be changed anymore etc.

Check the gist's comments for any further tips and instructions, especially if you are running into problems!

Linux on MacBook Pro Late 2016 and Mid 2017 (with Touchbar)

Introduction

This is about documenting getting Linux running on the late 2016 and mid 2017 MPB's; the focus is mostly on the MacBookPro13,3 and MacBookPro14,3 (15inch models), but I try to make it relevant and provide information for MacBookPro13,1, MacBookPro13,2, MacBookPro14,1, and MacBookPro14,2 (13inch models) too. I'm currently using Fedora 27, but most the things should be valid for other recent distros even if the details differ. The kernel version is 4.14.x (after latest update).

The state of linux on the MBP (with particular focus on MacBookPro13,2) is also being tracked on https://github.com/Dunedan/mbp-2016-linux . And for Ubuntu users there are a couple tutorials (here and here) focused on that distro and the MacBook.

Note: For those who have followed these instructions ealier, and in particular for those who have had problems with the custom DSDT, modifying the DSDT is not necessary anymore - se

API Authentication with Amazon Cognito

In the previous episodes we implemented the fundamental components of a tyical web application: "static" content and "dynamic" APIs. For each component, we´ve been using the most out of AWS services, such as S3, CloudFront, Lambda and API gateway. But so far we have only been working with public resources. Let us now learn more about user authentication and authorization in two very important services: AWS Identity and Access Management and Amazon Cognito. Even more importantly, let us integrate that within our React application ;)

  • Serverless Architecture Review
  • Introduction to Amazon Cognito
  • Cognito User Pools
  • Cognito Federated Identities
  • Cognito Identity SDK
  • AWS SDKs
  • Integrating with Javascript and React
  • Implementing Authentication Flows
