Hi, I'm Michael. I'm the guy who initiated Substance.io about 3 years ago.

What is Substance?

For those who don't know the project... Substance is the a complete browser-based solution for managing digital documents. Of course it's available as open source.

  • it's really challenging for publishers to implement an efficient integrated publishing workflow
  • currently, there's much manual work required (submission, review, publishing)

Describe your project in one sentence

Substance is a modern information system, designed to fundamentally change the way we collect, annotate and share health-related information, enabling new ways of collaboration for capturing and accessing content.

Summary

Despite the introduction of digital document formats, the creation and distribution of health-related data remains a costly and time-consuming task. Health organizations are lacking efficient information systems to provide structured content allowing for fast access of information by users. Critical parts involve incompatibilities of data exchange formats, the need for change management, versioning and secure ways of sharing data among trusted organizations.

With Substance we'd like to provide an extensive content creation and annotation framework, built on web infrastructure and designed to be customized and integrated by health cummunities into their workflows.

Title: eLife Lens - A novel way of seeing content

Abstract

Introduction

Working with digital documents used to be hard because for the most part, they come in presentation-centric formats, optimized for print and having the same display across multiple devices. Ultimately, the display of these documents had been preserved to ultimately allow the user to print the exact same document across any device. Content today, however, is no longer being printed out readily; instead, it is read on a variety of platforms spanning computers and mobile devices. The limitations presented by different screen sizes, the lack of tactile feedback that comes from flipping between pages and inability to purely focus on the author’s arguments are problems present in all disciplines.
