To Design or Not To Design? A Third Good Question

Following my earlier discussions of testing and defect fixing, I’ll complete the trilogy by discussing the role of design early in projects. Recall the context: projects that have validated a genuine need by haven’t validated an economic proposition. Because of the uncertainties of such a situation, iteration is inevitable. Piloting a project on the runway you will like have to try many experiments to find value customers will buy. Capital efficiency while iterating extends the lifespan of the project and increases its chances of success. The more experiments you can perform per dollar, the higher your expected return.

Review

In the sibling essays to this one I argued that the Extreme Programming principles of Test Until Bored and Defects Zero were perfectly appropriate to the cruise phase of a product, where the business driver is increasing profit by lowering cost. These principles also serve to prepare the software to act as a platform from which to

1. Voting

Each voter can vote in zero or more referenda. Each referendum has one or more questions, and each question is a yes/no vote. Write the simplest normalized schema to describe this in generic SQL statements or as an entity-relationship diagram. Point out where the indexes would be if you want to quickly know the results of a given referendum question, but you never expect to query a single voter's voting record.

2. Availability on AWS

Your client plans to host their web application on AWS. When would you advise (a) deployment in a single availability zone, (b) deployment in multiple availability zones in a single region (c) deployment in multiple regions? What operational difficulty or complexity, if any, is added as you go from (a) to (b) to (c)?

First of all you need to acquire a legal copy of OSX El Capitan from the App Store. This tutorial will not cover this part. Sorry :)

unRAID - automatically move photos to array
#!/bin/bash

## Usage (after configuration):
## 1. Insert camera's memory card into a USB port on your unRAID system
## 2. The system will automatically move (or copy) any images/videos from the memory card to the array
## If jhead was installed, it will automatically rotate images according to the exif data
## 3. Wait for the imperial theme to play, then remove the memory card
## Preparation:
