Common Error Notes

Testing

ERROR:

TypeError: Cannot read property 'map' of undefined

Solution:

Identify a contact you will reach out to by the end of this module. This could be a mentor, alum, or anyone from your current network. Describe:

  1. Who your contact is, why you want to connect with them, and what you want to talk about

My friend's brother and sister-in-law own a small web design firm in CO Springs. I want to talk to them about what its like to be a small firm. What do they look for in developers they hire. What languages and frameworks they use.

  1. When you will contact them by and how you plan to meet

I will contact them this week and suggest maybe we meet for coffee somewhere in Idaho Springs. Maybe I could even check out their office if they invite me.

What’s one technical challenge you overcame?

Writing modular code and using multiple files that connected and displayed well with grid-templates to create a visual layout that was easy to work with, add new data to, and create media queries with minimal effort.

What’s one non-technical challenge you overcame

A sick partner. Halfway through the first week of two, Collin got very sick and had to be home for about 5 days, and still never full recovered by the end of the project. While this perhaps halted the progress of our project slightly, it was also great pratice in remote working and communication!

Describe what DOM traversal is and why it is useful.

To find an element in relation to another element

Lets us navigate from one element to another

What can the siblings(), parent(), and children() methods do?

siblings() - Get the siblings of each element in the set of matched elements, optionally filtered by a selector.

Before I could hold a marker, I asked my mom to draw unicorns, dogs, and cars as I watched from my highchair. I loved watching the blank whiteboard transform and come to life. These moments solidified my path to the arts and more specifically to graphic design. I am in love with the combination of artistic expression with the utilitarian aspect of helping better people's lives.

For the past six years, I've been the lead designer for an athletic apparel company. While I appreciated that position for the creativity, my passion for truly helping people was not fullfilled. The impact of my designs were short lived. Once printed to apparel the clients experienced joy but soon grew too familiar with the designs. Year after year they would want new designs to better represent their new stage in life. If felt wasteful.

People change. I desire to create designs that adapt and remain an integral piece of a user's life. **example? I think talking about something that you've used that helped better YO

What have you learned about the use of agile vs. waterfall in software projects?

Agile is method where applications and features are tested early and often and their goal is to be in the hands of the consumer as quickly as possible, often times in the form of an MVP (minimum viable product) to receive feedback and gauge need.

Waterfall is a method that seems to only benefit projects that can't be tested. One example shared was a team that works on rockets that go into space. It is hard to test a product like this untill its go time. With waterfall, lots of research is done upfront and the testing and user interaction comes in at the end.

How did you and your group approach project management in this project (what tools did you use, how did you hold each other accountable, etc.)?

We used Trello for our product management and really enjoyed the process. Setting up Trello at the beginning of our project with all the bullet points and stages required in the project laid out helped us get a good grasp

DTR: Define the Relationship

Use this template to when conducting DTR with your project partners. It's recommended that you copy/paste this template into your own gist each time you conduct a DTR to take notes on the conversation.

Guiding Questions to Define The Relationship:

  • What are each of our learning goals for this project? What drives us in this project?
  • What is your collaboration style? How do you feel about pair programming vs. divide-and-conquer approaches?
  • How do you communicate best? How do you appreciate receiving communication from others?
  • How would you describe your work style?

GearUp: Empathy

  1. What role does empathy play in your life and how has it helped you?

Empathy has guided me to becoming a good wife, friend, daughter, sister, co-worker and stranger. Empathy has taught me to be caring and thoughtful. To step into the shoes of others, see situations from their perspective and therefore be able to more appropriately and effectively interact.

  2. How does empathy help you build better software?

Software is made for computers. Computers are used by people. To best design for people, you have to understand people. Empathy is feeling what others feel and being able to share those feelings. When we understand what others want and need, we can then design better software around that.

Career Development

  1. What is your greatest strength and how do you know?

My greatest strength is my thoughtfulness. I am thoughtful when it comes to myself; to the actions I take and the beliefs I hold. I am thoughtful to others; to understand and appreciate their actions and beliefs. I am thoughtful in my career; how to best problem solve daily and how to succeed in the long run. I know this because I think, a lot. Every day I focus effort to better myself, not only for me, but for others. I have very close friends and connect well with people I meet for the first time. I put my best foot forward and hope my positive attitude and friendly actions pay it forward.
