Checkout github pull requests locally

Locate the section for your github remote in the .git/config file. It looks like this:

[remote "origin"]
	fetch = +refs/heads/*:refs/remotes/origin/*
	url = [email protected]:joyent/node.git

Now add the line fetch = +refs/pull/*/head:refs/remotes/origin/pr/* to this section. Obviously, change the github url to match your project's URL. It ends up looking like this:

Jim Weirich on the differences between procs and lambdas in Ruby

Jim Weirich:

This is how I explain it… Ruby has Procs and Lambdas. Procs are created with Proc.new { }, lambdas are created with lambda {} and ->() {}.

In Ruby 1.8, proc {} creates lambda, and Ruby 1.9 it creates procs (don't ask).

Lambdas use method semantics when handling parameters, procs use assignment semantics when handling parameters.

This means lambdas, like methods, will raise an ArgumentError when called with fewer arguments than they were defined with. Procs will simply assign nil to variables for arguments that were not passed in.

HTMLBars Binding

HTMLBars serves as a polyfill for a native implement of node.bind.

Instead of letting the browser parse the HTML and generate nodes, which leaves us at the mercy of the limitations of the parser, HTMLBars implements an HTML parser and generates the nodes itself.

As HTMLBars generates the nodes, it calls into node.bind if it detects mustache syntax.

Can people run this script and see if it gives accurate count of CPUs on their system. Report results in the comments please. Thanks! Oh! And don't forget to report what kind of system you are running this on (linux, windows, mac, etc.). UPDATE: Revised version that uses the Java runtime if running under JRuby.
require 'rbconfig'
# Based on a script at:

Когда мы хотим скопировать данные из production окружения Ruby on Rails приложения в development или staging, обычно, нам нужно скопировать дамп базы данных и статические файлы (например, изображения загруженные пользователями). Копирование базы может не представляет проблем (например, ее можно копировать из бэкапов или резервных серверов БД). А вот копирование статических файлов занимает много времени и ресурсов сервера с которого копируют (и на который копируются) файлы.

a simple git branching model

a simple git branching model (written in 2013)

This is a very simple git workflow. It (and variants) is in use by many people. I settled on it after using it very effectively at Athena. GitHub does something similar; Zach Holman mentioned it in this talk.

Update: Woah, thanks for all the attention. Didn't expect this simple rant to get popular.

CoffeeScript upcoming changes.

CoffeeScript 1.7 is shaping up to be a pretty kick-ass release with significant improvements. Here are the ones I'm most excited about, in order of my own excitement.

Parentheses-free chaining
