Idiomatic React Testing Patterns

Idiomatic React Testing Patterns

Testing React components seems simple at first. Then you need to test something that isn't a pure interaction and things seem to break down. These 4 patterns should help you write readable, flexible tests for the type of component you are testing.

Setup

I recommend doing all setup in the most functional way possible. If you can avoid it, don't set variables in a beforeEach. This will help ensure tests are isolated and make things a bit easier to reason about. I use a pattern that gives great defaults for each test example but allows every example to override props when needed:

How to convert a .pfx SSL certificate to .crt/key (pem) formats

source: http://www.markbrilman.nl/2011/08/howto-convert-a-pfx-to-a-seperate-key-crt-file/

openssl pkcs12 -in [yourfile.pfx] -nocerts -out [keyfile-encrypted.key]

What this command does is extract the private key from the .pfx file. Once entered you need to type in the importpassword of the .pfx file. This is the password that you used to protect your keypair when you created your .pfx file. If you cannot remember it anymore you can just throw your .pfx file away, cause you won’t be able to import it again, anywhere!. Once you entered the import password OpenSSL requests you to type in another password, twice!. This new password will protect your .key file.

Now let’s extract the certificate:

openssl pkcs12 -in [yourfile.pfx] -clcerts -nokeys -out [certificate.crt]

Understanding TCP_NODELAY

I believe the following is the best way to work with Nagle's algorithm / TCP_NODELAY / TCP_CORK.

It is described in this RedHat manual and the verdict is:

  • Set TCP_NODELAY = 1, always.
  • If you can batch data for sending by creating a buffer manually, or using writev(), prefer that.
  • If you cannot (e.g. "when using different libraries that provides abstractions for layers" from the above manual):
    • Set TCP_CORK = 1, then write the data, then set TCP_CORK = 0.
  • This builds a packet in kernel space and then flushes it out.

JavaScript Safe Navigation

Experimental Safe JavaScript Navigation

Implemented using ES6 Proxies and Symbols

The purpose of this function is to provide a way to avoid deep nested conditionals when traversing a hierarchy of objects. Some languages use an operator such as '?.' to perform this capability. This is sometimes called safe navigation or null conditional operators.

You can somewhat think of this as how a xpath select works. If any nodes along the path are not found, your result is simply not found without throwing an exception and without needing to check each individual node to see if it exists.

Suggestions for improvements welcome!
