OS X Redirect ports 80 and 443 to 8080 and 8443 respectively

Changes with .dev domains in mind.

Create /etc/pf.anchors/dev, containing:

rdr pass inet proto tcp from any to any port 80 -> 127.0.0.1 port 8080
rdr pass inet proto tcp from any to any port 443 -> 127.0.0.1 port 8443

KVM OSX Guest 10.11 (El Capitan) with Clover

  • Some notes about this approach:
    • An OSX Installer USB drive for Install OS X El Capitan is created
    • Clover is then installed on the USB drive
    • Clover Configurator is then run on the USB drive
    • The USB drive contents are copied to the VM host
    • VNC is used to connect to the guest UI
  • The qxl virtual video device is used (part of the standard kvm qemu install)

Using Swift libraries in Python

Using Swift libraries in Python

So... this is obviously totally, 100%, like for. real. not. supported. by. Apple. …yet?

But still... I thought it was pretty badass. And, seeing how there's already a Swift buildpack for Heroku you could move some slow code into Swift can call it as a library function. But, you know, not in production or anything. That would be silly, right?

Now, having said that, the actual Python/Swift interop may have bugs. I'll leave that as an exercise to the reader.

How to get Python code calling Swift functions:

Installing TensorFlow on EC2
# Note – this is not a bash script (some of the steps require reboot)
# I named it .sh just so Github does correct syntax highlighting.
#
# This is also available as an AMI in us-east-1 (virginia): ami-cf5028a5
#
# The CUDA part is mostly based on this excellent blog post:
# Install various packages
sudo apt-get update

talk given by John Ousterhout about sustaining relationships

"Scar Tissues Make Relationships Wear Out"

04/26/2103. From a lecture by Professor John Ousterhout at Stanford, class CS142.

This is my most touchy-feely thought for the weekend. Here’s the basic idea: It’s really hard to build relationships that last for a long time. If you haven’t discovered this, you will discover this sooner or later. And it's hard both for personal relationships and for business relationships. And to me, it's pretty amazing that two people can stay married for 25 years without killing each other.

[Laughter]

> But honestly, most professional relationships don't last anywhere near that long. The best bands always seem to break up after 2 or 3 years. And business partnerships fall apart, and there's all these problems in these relationships that just don't last. So, why is that? Well, in my view, it’s relationships don't fail because there some single catastrophic event to destroy them, although often there is a single catastrophic event around the the end of the relation
