Error management in gulp

#Error management in gulp

Sucking at something is the first step to becoming sorta good at something

No one can assure you, that plugins will run smooth in any circumstances (except for tests - they could), so neither should you convince anyone, that your plugin will never break. Only thing, that you could possibly do (if something gone wrong) - is gracefully inform your plugin user, that something went wrong and die.

We are will use this plugin from beginning to demonstrate error management. Suppose you have a task in gulpfile.js that contains this code (we modified it a little bit to be closer to real-usage):

var coffee = require('gulp-coffee');

Fix SVGs not scaling in IE9, IE10, and IE11

Fix SVG in <img> tags not scaling in IE9, IE10, IE11

IE9, IE10, and IE11 don't properly scale SVG files added with img tags when viewBox, width and height attributes are specified. View this codepen on the different browsers.

Image heights will not scale when the images are inside containers narrower than image widths. This can be resolved in 2 ways.

Use sed in bash to remove width and height attributes in SVG files

As per this answer on Stackoverflow, the issue can be resolved by removing just the width and height attributes.

Dominant Baseline Style

Demonstrates the effect of dominant baseline for each of its possible values on text positioning in an SVG.

Each browser/ mobile browser seems to handle these a bit differently. Here are some issues:

  • Retrieving bounding boxes only works correctly after the font is loaded (and there is no easy way to find out when this happens)
  • The bounding box width does not reflect the actual extent of a text, but how far it advances the cursor. That means that in an italic letter 'f' in many fonts, part of the f will actually lie outside of the bounding box
  • The baseline-shift style does not work in FF
  • dominant-baseline values are interpreted different among browsers

All in all its best just use 'alphabetical' (which is consistent across browsers) and do any further vertical positioning by manually by using the x,y or dx,dy or the transform attributes. Also, if one needs to find out about the actual bounds of a text, one cannot rely on the getBBox() or the getBoundingClientRect() DOM methods, but has to use

JS: AngularJS Directive Attribute Binding Explanation

AngularJS Directive Attribute Binding Explanation

When using directives, you often need to pass parameters to the directive. This can be done in several ways. The first 3 can be used whether scope is true or false. This is still a WIP, so validate for yourself.

  1. Raw Attribute Strings

    <div my-directive="some string" another-param="another string"></div>
