MapleStory Universe (MSU) is Nexon/NEXPACE's blockchain expansion of the classic MapleStory IP. It's a virtual world ecosystem (not just one game) centered on MapleStory lore with over 180 million registered users and $4 billion in revenue from the MapleStory franchise. Key components include:
- MapleStory N - The flagship PC MMORPG with blockchain integration
- MapleStory N Mobile - Mobile version sharing the same NFT ecosystem
- MapleStory N Worlds - A creator-driven sandbox for user-generated content
- MapleStory SDK - Development tools for creating apps within the ecosystem
MSU runs on a dedicated Avalanche Layer-1 network called Henesys, powered by AvaCloud. Transactions are gas-free for players. The Avalanche partnership gives MSU a highly scalable, reliable blockchain (moved from an initial Polygon plan).
The project is built around what Nexon calls the "Reward Experience 2.0" concept, which focuses on:
- Community-driven economies
- True digital asset ownership
- Content creation opportunities
- No cash shop or pre-sale – players earn everything by playing
- June 2023: MapleStory Universe announced (Web3 campaign "MapleStory: Genesis" launched)
- July 2023: Official reveal at GDC/Token2049 and Chainlink VRF partnership announced (for provable randomness)
- March 2024: Moved from Polygon to Avalanche (Henesys) for technology/scalability
- July 24–August 2, 2024: Pioneer Test I – closed beta (~1,000 players) with over 45,000 hours logged and 82% retention rate. Features: character minting, monster/boss battles, item drops/enhancement, on-chain marketplace
- November 20–29, 2024: Pioneer Test II (Open Beta) – marketplace/explorer added with expanded events and "Make Special Name" NFT event
- November 29–December 23, 2024: Gear Up Now (Pre-Launch Event) – introduced Live World Leap, letting eligible testers transfer characters & items to official servers
- February 12–March 12, 2025: Live World Leap (cont'd) – players could complete tasks to carry progress to mainnet
- April 16, 2025: Henesys Mainnet Launch – MSU's Avalanche-based chain goes live
- May 15, 2025: Official Launch (PC) – MapleStory N releases globally on Avalanche/Henesys
Note: The game will be available globally but notably will not be released in South Korea due to the country's restrictions on blockchain-based games.
MapleStory N runs on a custom Avalanche L1 blockchain (Henesys), ensuring secure and transparent transactions. Key features include:
- Gas-free Transactions: Players don't pay transaction fees (via meta-transactions on AvaCloud)
- Chainlink VRF: Integrates Chainlink Verifiable Random Function to ensure transparent and cryptographically secure randomness for events like rare item drops
- Seamless Integration: Blockchain elements are designed to be intuitive, even for players unfamiliar with Web3 technology
- Use any Avalanche-compatible wallet (MetaMask with Avalanche settings, Avalanche Wallet, Coinbase Wallet, etc.)
- Wallets connect to the MSU Marketplace for trading NFTs
- Tuner's Guide videos cover wallet setup for beginners
MapleStory N operates with a dual-token system designed to balance gameplay and economic sustainability.
- Core ecosystem token with a fixed supply of 1 billion tokens
- Used for:
- Transaction fees on the blockchain
- Fission (minting NFTs) and Fusion (burning NFTs for NXPC)
- Rewards for creators/contributors
- Distribution:
- ~80% (800M) to player/contributor rewards
- ~16.3% (163.17M) for early community initiatives (quests, bug bounties, Live Leap rewards)
- 2% to IP licensor
- ~1% to team/advisors
- Follows a BTC-like halving schedule with only ~169M NXPC (16.9%) unlocked at TGE
- Primary in-game currency (initially "NESOLET" off-chain, convertible 1:1 from NXPC)
- Earned through gameplay activities (quests, battles, etc.)
- Used for buying/upgrading/minting items in-game
- Can be converted to on-chain NESO to create NFTs
- Supply-Demand Pricing: Item/enhancement costs fluctuate with demand
- Limited Supply: Controlled token issuance plus fixed NFT supplies prevents inflation
- Dynamic Rewards System: Items drop from fields or bosses in limited quantities per cycle
- Self-Regulating Economy: Item values maintained through intentional scarcity and player-driven market forces
- Characters and in-game items are minted as NFTs with predefined limited supplies
- Each NFT has an on-chain record of key stats (AP, level, bonuses)
- NFTs are interoperable across the entire MapleStory Universe ecosystem
- Character NFTs: Avatar classes with unique skills and appearances
- Equipment NFTs: Weapons, armor, accessories with varying stats and rarity
- Cosmetic NFTs: Skins and appearance items
- Special NFTs: Event rewards, name NFTs, and other collectibles
- In-Game Drops: Defeat monsters/bosses and complete quests to obtain mintable items
- Minting: Mintable items (with cloud icon) can be converted to NFTs via the inventory UI
- Events/Promos: Special giveaways like the "Make Special Name NFT" event
- Marketplace: Buy from other players on the MSU Marketplace or external marketplaces
- The only method for generating new items in MapleStory N
- Players burn NXPC tokens to receive an NFT basket containing game items
- Creates natural scarcity as items can only be introduced by consuming tokens
- Even developers must use this process to issue rewards, ensuring system integrity
- The opposite of Fission - players combine items into an NFT basket
- Once a basket is complete, it can be converted into NXPC tokens
- Encourages collaboration as players often need to pool resources to complete baskets
- Creates a cyclical economy where items can be converted back to tokens
- 2D side-scrolling MMORPG experience
- Combat-focused gameplay with monsters and bosses
- Quest-based progression system
- Social features including parties and guilds
- Limited item supply through "Dynamic Rewards" system
- NFT-based item ownership
- No traditional Cash Shop (replaced by Web3 mechanics)
- Different growth structure and game meta
- Modified level caps and job progression
- Side-scrolling combat with customizable skills
- Skill combos grant bonus XP (multi-kill chains)
- Field hunting for experience and item drops
- Boss fights like Zakum (Easy mode: Lv. 50+, Normal mode: Lv. 90+) for rare NFTs
- Party quests encouraging cooperative play
- Limited Supply: Each item has a set quantity, categorized by type, level, and rarity
- Mintable vs. Non-mintable: Mintable items (cloud icon) can become NFTs, non-mintable items (L mark) cannot
- Enhancement: Upgrading gear uses NESO/NXPC with costs that fluctuate based on demand
- Reward Dashboard: Displays remaining items, helping players strategize which monsters or bosses to target
- Quest App: Complete community tasks for extra points/NXPC
- Explorer: Monitor on-chain activity (hot items, transaction counts)
- Marketplace App: Track listings/prices in real time
- User-generated content through MapleStory SDK
MapleStory N features many character classes from the original game, potentially with modifications to balance and progression.
