Understanding Google Chrome Extensions

#Introduction

Developing Chrome Extensions is REALLY fun if you are a Front End engineer. If you, however, struggle with visualizing the architecture of an application, then developing a Chrome Extension is going to bite your butt multiple times due the amount of excessive components the extension works with. Here are some pointers in how to start, what problems I encounter and how to avoid them.

Note: I'm not covering chrome package apps, which although similar, work in a different way. I also won't cover the page options api neither the new brand event pages. What I explain covers most basic chrome applications and should be enough to get you started.

Set the iTerm tab title to the current directory, not full path.
# put this in your .bash_profile
if [ $ITERM_SESSION_ID ]; then
export PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne "\033];${PWD##*/}\007"; ':"$PROMPT_COMMAND";
fi
# Piece-by-Piece Explanation:
# the if condition makes sure we only screw with $PROMPT_COMMAND if we're in an iTerm environment
# iTerm happens to give each session a unique $ITERM_SESSION_ID we can use, $ITERM_PROFILE is an option too
# the $PROMPT_COMMAND environment variable is executed every time a command is run

How to create a "DMG Installer" for Mac OS X

Creating a "DMG installer" for OS X

A DMG Installer is convenient way to provide end-users a simple way to install an application bundle. They are basically a folder with a shortcut to the Applications directory but they can be customized with icons, backgrounds, and layout properties. A DMG file (.dmg) is a Mac OS X Disk Image file and it is used to package files or folders providing compression, encryption, and read-only to the package.

Setup dnsmasq on OS X

Never touch your local /etc/hosts file in OS X again

To setup your computer to work with *.test domains, e.g. project.test, awesome.test and so on, without having to add to your hosts file each time.
