Hot Swapping With Maven, Jetty and IntelliJ

Based on Configuring Jetty, Maven, and Eclipse together with Hot Swap

I've always been a bit jealous when it comes to the Play! framework and the great dev mode they have for hot swapping classes at runtime. Jetty has a configuration setting, scanIntervalSeconds, that mimics this when working with a more traditional WAR, but does so by looking for changes to a file and restarting the server.

Fortunately, Jetty also provides the ability to rapidly test code with hot swapping. No more server restarts. The trick to getting hot swapping to work is to attach a remote debugger to your Jetty process. The following instructions outline how to do this in IntelliJ (tested with IDEA 10.5 CE).

Modify your jetty-maven-plugin to ignore the scan interval

Prefix key

The default prefix is C-b. If you (or your muscle memory) prefer C-a, you need to add this to ~/.tmux.conf:

remap prefix to Control + a

Open Computing Language (OpenCL) is a language and framework for writing computationally intensive kernels that run accross heterogenious platforms, including GPUs, CPUs, and perhaps other more esoteric devices.

Intel provides an OpenCL implementation for Intel CPUs, but there's not a lot of instructions on how to get it set up. Here's what I did.

Installing Intel CPU OpenCL on Ubuntu (12.04)

Download the Intel® SDK for OpenCL* Applications XE 2013 from the Intel website, here http://software.intel.com/en-us/vcsource/tools/opencl-sdk-xe. The download is a tarball -- the one I got is called intel_sdk_for_ocl_applications_2013_xe_sdk_3.0.67279_x64.tgz
Unpack the tarball and cd into the new directory

Resize a Hard Disk for a Virtual Machine

Our Virtual Machines are provisioned using Vagrant from a Linux base box to run using VirutalBox. If the Hard Disk space runs out and you cannot remove files to free-up space, you can resize the Hard Disk using some VirtualBox and Linux commands.

Some assumptions

The following steps assume you've got a set-up like mine, where:

Provisioning

Launch one T2 micro instance, using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS AMI.
Open SSH and Bitcoin Protocol TCP ports: 22, 8333.
Attach 40GB EBS (General-Purpose SSD) volume for blockchain storage to /dev/sdf.

Generating your key pair

gpg --gen-key

echo "export GPGKEY=01086FDA" > ~/.bashrc

Install Terminator (shell)

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome-terminator
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install terminator

Terminator should be setup as default now. Restart your terminal (shortcut: "Ctrl+Alt+T").
