| What role does empathy play in your life and how has it helped you? | |
| I find that, at its base level, I like people who have a natural ability to empathise with me and with whom I can empathise. It makes me want to spend more time around those people, and be more open with them. | |
| Its helped me to build stronger relationships, especially by putting myself in a close friend's or partner's shoes. In a business setting, I am learning to see the viewpoint of my superiors and make it clear that I | |
| understand where they are coming from, which helps us build stronger connections and expidites projects and work. | |
| How does empathy help you build better software? | |
| It helps me see where my end-user is coming from, especially in their context of what they will be using the software for. If the software doesn't match the context for which is will be used in, or if it strikes the end user | |
| as antithetical to their habits, behaviours, and beliefs, then they will not use it long-term. I think its important to meet people where they are at if you want to effect change, and technology is no different. We can do amazing things | |
| with tech, but we much first understand the inner workings of whom we are making that tech for and introduce innovation to match their already existing paradigm. | |
| Why is empathy important for working on a team? | |
| Empathy is important for working on a team because it allows you to more easily and quickly connect with your team members at their core, which allows for them to trust you more quickly. When there is trust, there is a solid foundation | |
| on which to build a relationship, and when you have stronger relationships with your team, working becomes more delightful and productivity also goes up. | |
| Describe a situation in which your ability to empathize with a colleague or teammate was helpful. | |
| ****COME BACK TO THIS**** | |
| When do you find it most difficult to be empathetic in professional settings? How can you improve your skills when faced with these scenarios? | |
| I find it most difficult to empathise when I percieve I am being criticized in an unconstructive manner. Usually this just puts me on the defensive and I become resentful and the relationship takes a hit. | |
| I think what may be best is to become more skilled at assertiveness. Instead of just caving and doing what the other person says and then becoming resentful or, conversely, defending my viewpoint until kingdom come, | |
| I can learn to to tune in to what they are saying, and then let them know they've been heard, and then, work out a mutually beneficial solution. Very much easier said than done, but it is an area for growth. |
