Better local require() paths for Node.js

Better local require() paths for Node.js

Problem

When the directory structure of your Node.js application (not library!) has some depth, you end up with a lot of annoying relative paths in your require calls like:

const Article = require('../../../../app/models/article');

Those suck for maintenance and they're ugly.

Possible solutions

a circleci parallelism script optimized for rspec.this script is based on https://circleci.com/docs/parallel-manual-setup#balancing
#!/bin/bash
i=0
files=()
# sort spec files by number of examples for better balancing
for file in $(find ./spec -name "*_spec.rb" -print0 | xargs -0 grep -e "^ *it" -c | sort -t: -k2,2rn | awk -F":" '{ print $1 }')
do
if [ $(($i % $CIRCLE_NODE_TOTAL)) -eq $CIRCLE_NODE_INDEX ]
then
files+=" $file"

Lista coworkingów w Krakowie

Coworking w Krakowie

Update 28.04.2018

This monkey patch of rails_admin allows me to set the timezone for rails_admin models explicitly, while the rest of the app runs on utc.
require 'rails_admin/config/fields/base'
module RailsAdmin
module Config
module Fields
module Types
class Datetime < RailsAdmin::Config::Fields::Base
def value
value_in_default_time_zone = bindings[:object].send(name)

Rails 3.1+ force_ssl & HSTS problem

Rails 3.1 introduced force_ssl. You can add config.force_ssl = true in application.rb.

By enabling force_ssl, Rails send a HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security) header which will expired in a year.

So if you enabled force_ssl once, even you change the config value to false later, the browser you used to open you app before will still remember this website (using domain to identify) require to use HTTPS, and redirect you to HTTPS connection automatically. You may use chrome://net-internals/#hsts to check the domain list in Google Chrome.

Con$ole Bling

Con$ole Bling

Before I get into this, I should point out that if you have jQuery on your page, when you type $ in your console it's indeed jQuery, otherwise, it's defined by your developer tools.

History

A bit ago, someone on SO asked where does $$() come from? Alex Russell called this "the bling-bling function", and it's part of the Command Line API and will return an array of elements to match a CSS selector. Why the double $$? Well, the single $ was already taken: the pioneer of developer tools, Firebug, assigned the $() to getElementById and so it has remained.

But.. let's be real though, ID's? Who is using ID's anymore? Using $ and $$ I often tho

In order to use asset pipeline available for static error pages (like 404.html), a few steps are required

  • Move static pages from /public into /app/assets

    (eg: public/422.html → app/assets/html/422.html.erb)

  • Add html directory to the asset pipeline

  • Update exceptions middleware to understand assets with digests
