Important Numbers:

  • Reaction time: 1 second (average driver)
  • Following distance: 2 seconds

Equations:

  1. Following Distance Calculation: Following Distance (m) = (Speed / 2) + 10% (Speed / 2) or 1.1 (speed/2)

  2. Reaction Distance Calculation: Reaction Distance (m) = (Speed / 10) * 3

  3. Braking Distance Calculation: Reaction Distance (m) = ((Speed / 10) * (Speed / 10)) / 2

  4. Stopping Distance: Stopping Distance = Reaction Distance + Braking Distance

Examples of Following Distances:

  • 30 km/h: 16.5 meters
  • 50 km/h: 27.5 meters
  • 100 km/h: 55 meters
  • 130 km/h: 71.5 meters

Examples of Reaction Distances:

  • 30 km/h: 9 meters
  • 50 km/h: 15 meters
  • 100 km/h: 30 meters
  • 130 km/h: 39 meters

Examples of Braking Distances:

  • 30 km/h: 4.5 meters
  • 50 km/h: 12.5 meters
  • 100 km/h: 50 meters
  • 130 km/h: 84.5 meters
