@ouraigua When getting an IPA from the App Store, Apple encrypts it with a key derived from your Apple ID. You can see this by examining the Mach-O load commands (which are discussed in several chapters in the book). You can see if an app is encrypted by typing otool -l /path/to/executable | grep -i crypt
You'll need to decrypt an App using a jailbroken device (and using tools like bfdecrypt
). If you are unable to obtain these, the best you can do is try using Xcode's Archive option to examine an IPA which is unencrypted.
Thanks for the prompt reply. I appreciate.
I prefer to get my hands dirty rather than using a tool. I do have a jailbroken device. When you say decrypt, do you mean remote LLDB the app so as to dump encrypted part of the executable then insert it back. I've done this before so I should be ok.
Thanks again
Yes, using LLDB is one way to do it. Just remember you need to know only do it for the main executable, but also for everything in ./Frameworks, ./PlugIns, etc
Thank you for sharing this script. The nested signing was the missing piece of my code-signing puzzle.
I ran into slight issues with xpath
- it seems like the (default?) version of xpath
in perl v5.28.2
/ macOS 11.1 (20C69) expects different args:
# in script
/usr/bin/xpath "$EXTRACTED_ENT" '//*[text() = "Entitlements"]/following-sibling::dict'
# on v5.28.2
/usr/bin/xpath -e '//*[text() = "Entitlements"]/following-sibling::dict' "$EXTRACTED_ENT"
The following patch fixed it for me, for anyone else who may run into the same issue:
132c132
< EXPIRATION_DATE=$(/usr/bin/xpath "$EXTRACTED_ENT" '//*[text() = "ExpirationDate"]/following-sibling::date/text()' 2>/dev/null )
---
> EXPIRATION_DATE=$(/usr/bin/xpath -e '//*[text() = "ExpirationDate"]/following-sibling::date/text()' "$EXTRACTED_ENT" 2>/dev/null )
139c139
< APP_IDENTIFIER=$(/usr/bin/xpath "$EXTRACTED_ENT" '//*[text() = "application-identifier"]/following-sibling::string[1]/text()' 2>/dev/null | cut -d. -f 2-80 )
---
> APP_IDENTIFIER=$(/usr/bin/xpath -e '//*[text() = "application-identifier"]/following-sibling::string[1]/text()' "$EXTRACTED_ENT" 2>/dev/null | cut -d. -f 2-80 )
141c141
< IS_AD_HOC=$(/usr/bin/xpath "$EXTRACTED_ENT" '//*[text() = "ProvisionsAllDevices"]/following-sibling::*[1]' 2>/dev/null || : | /usr/bin/grep -i true)
---
> IS_AD_HOC=$(/usr/bin/xpath -e '//*[text() = "ProvisionsAllDevices"]/following-sibling::*[1]' "$EXTRACTED_ENT" 2>/dev/null || : | /usr/bin/grep -i true)
158c158
< /usr/bin/xpath "$EXTRACTED_ENT" '//*[text() = "Entitlements"]/following-sibling::dict' 2>/dev/null | grep -v -e '^$' | sed -e $'s/\t<\/dict>/<\/dict>/g' | sed -e $'s/\t\t/\t/g' | sed -e "s| /|/|g" > "$ENT_DICT"
---

Thanks for the script.
I can resign and debug the Wordpress app. Being curious i tried the same procedure on an App Store app extracted from an IPA, and it failed to start.
Does the methods described in Advanced Debugging book work for these apps?
