Section II: Short Answer Responses

Why do you want mentoring in the job search?

  • I haven't looked for a job in 6+ years so I'm definitely lacking some interview skills. Mentoring can help me by doing some mock interviews and since software interviews also have the added technical aspect to them I would love to get a few technical interview practice under my belt before I have a real one. Another big factor why I want to do this is to have someone else review my cover letters. Since English is my second language I know I can have typos and grammatical errors.

How will you hold yourself accountable to balancing time for your job search and following your mentor and group's advice?

  • Main way is by sticking to my calendar. At the end of each week, specifically on Sunday, look at the coming week ahead to fine tune and adapt my job hunt calender. My mentor whom I meet with every week on Thursday will be asking me how the job hunt is going so that's another way of being in check.

What is the focus of your job search (timeline, ideal job, steps you’ve already taken)? Be as specific as you can.

  • My main focus is being able to get the phone screen, behavioral interview, and technical interview down by which I mean feeling comfortable with those processes and doing a few mock ones before doing it for real.
  • I would like to apply to at least two places by the end of the second week.
  • I've already done two practice technical interviews with my mentor however I would like to do more with different people to get feedback.
