Mentee: Define the Relationship (DTR) Prep

To start this assignment:

Please use the following gist to capture your thoughts, goals, priorities, etc. as outlined by each question. You will be using these questions to help give your mentor a better idea of who you are and want to become as a developer! Please note, this is meant to be a starting point for building your norms with your mentor - you may need to adjust scheduling expecations, communication expectations, etc. when you start working with your mentor!

  1. What is your preferred name?
  • My preferred name is Ricardo.
  1. What are your pronouns?
  • My pronouns are he/him.
  1. What did you do before Turing?
  • I was a heavy equipment operator with the Marine corps and then transitioned out of it about 8 months ago and started working as a truck driver for a tree company.
  1. What made you decide to come to Turing?
  • I knew I needed a change to better my life and move foward with the rest of the world. Since technology is such a big part of it now, I looked for the best way to incorporate myself in it and that's how I found out about turing. I read and heard nothing but good things about it and I deciced I wanted to be part of it.
  1. What are you most excited about exploring in your career in tech?
  • I want to learn how applications work and I want to apply that so I can develop my own.

Scheduling Details

Please review the Mod 1 calendar for FE or BE when answering the following questions.

  1. What are your preferred times of day to connect with your mentor? (Early evening, lunch, etc.)
  • I think early evening works best for now.
  1. What are your known scheduling restrictions? (Family obligations, life obligations, etc.)
  • As of right now I'm pretty much invested all day with turing so no specific obligations outside of that.

Communication

  1. What is your preferred method to connect with your mentor? (Slack? Email? Text?)
  • I prefer text or talking on the phone, it's easy to keep track of it that way.
  1. What is your preferred cadence for communication? Twice a week? Weekly?
  • Twice a week.
  1. What time frame can you commit to acknowledging you have seen a message if you are too busy to send a detailed response?
  • 5 to 10 mins.
  1. What time frame can you commit to sending a detailed response to a message when time permits?
  • As soon time permits or 10 mins.

Specific Support Requests

  1. What are the your technical strengths and areas for desired improvement?
  • I'm pretty new to technology and everything that comes with it. As far as what we went over in this pre work I think I still need some work with functions. I got a grasp on everything else, I think now it is just a matter of practice and actually putting it to work.
  1. Is there any specific technical topic that we should focus on this inning?
  • As I mentioned it earlier I think to go over functions to see how they are applied and how they work in real situations.
  1. Are there any topics from last inning that we should focus on reviewing?

Concerns for this Inning

  1. Do you have anything that your mentor should be aware of? (upcoming life events, concerns about the upcoming curriculum, job hunt, etc)
  • Nothing that I can think of at the moment.
  1. What do I need when I get overwhelmed?
  • I usually don't reach out for help until I'm completely overwhelmed but sometimes a little push to guide me in the right direction helps.

Hello!,

My name is Ricardo Tovar and my pronouns are he/him. I'm in the front end program and part of the 2108 cohort. I was a Marine and then a trucker before deciding to come to turing. I've only been out of the military for a few months and still trying to adjust to life outside of it. I've been out of a a school enviroment for quite some time so I ask for a bit of patiance. I hope we get along well and I'm looking foward to working with you!.
