You will see lot golden yellows with splashes of red and orange, and different shades of green amongst the forest. There is a lot of wonderful variety in colors. Ferns and grasses have turned golden brown with a a few colorful fall flowers left. Migrating birds are lining the roadsides looking for bugs, while geese honk overhead against the patchwork colors of fall.<br /><br />\r\n\r\nTrees and Shrubs: Ashes and basswood have turned golden yellows and are quickly turning brown and falling off. Maples are mostly yellow, orange or red, while a few are still completely green. Sumac and Mountain Ash have turned their wine colored maroons. Aspen and birch are catching up with trees turned yellow green to full golden yellow. Most oaks are turning with some scarlet red and others tannin brown. <br /><br />\r\n\r\nFlowers: There are still some flowers in bloom, mostly along the highway. Look for purple or new england aster, some white asters and a few brown-eyed susans still blooming.",

Check the photos submitted by park staff for an unfiltered view of current color conditions. <br /><br />\r\n\r\nGood Places to Visit:<br />\r\nThe Swinging Bridge Visitor Area: See an up close view of the rushing rapids in the park with colors changing along the shorelines. Morning is a great time with beautiful light and fog rising off the river. Color here is about 75% changed.<br /><br />\r\n\r\nGood Trails in the visitor center area: Forbay paved bike path has a lot of maple color and no mud! Ridge trails are easy and grassy paths leading through a tunnel of color. CCC trail on the north side of the river will give you nice water views on an easy path. Be prepared for mud and slippery spots. Good treads on your shoes and a hiking stick are very helpful right now.<br /><br />\r\n\r\nOldenburg Point Picnic Grounds: See panoramic views of the park and river valley. One mile east of the visitor area on highway 210. Half way there will be a nice pull over spot along the highway at a highway bridge for a great river view. Continue on to the picnic area with a lot of maple trees in color, then walk the paved paths to the river overlooks. There are three to choose from. Two along the path and one on Ogantz Trail. Color here is about 75 - 80% changed. <br /><br />\r\n\r\nHighway 210 drive through the park: Scenic drive with occasional views of the river. A few fall flowers left and many migrating birds. Highway 210 connects with Highway 23 on the east side of the park if you are looking for a longer drive. Colors along the highway appear the greatest changed and well worth the drive through. Color change is 75 - 85%.<br /><br />\r\n\r\nGrand Portage Trail parking lot: On the far east side of the park off of Highway 210. Pull in here and walk down to the river edge. Early morning visits are best with the calm water, rising fog, and beautiful tree reflections across the river reservoir. Color here is the most changed closer to 90%.",
"alsoOfInterest": "With colors getting closer to peak the park can be very busy on fall color weekends.<br /><br />\r\nTips: Anticipate filled parking lots that we frequently need to close to additional traffic and the need to park on the highway and walk in on weekends. Midweek, or early morning (before 9 am) or late afternoons (after 5 pm) on weekends are a bit less crowded. The highway through the park on weekends can be extremely busy so drive carefully and watch for pedestrians along road sides or crossing to hiking trails. \r\n\r\n<br /><br />The visitor center area has ADA parking spaces, accessible bathrooms, and an accessible sidewalk to the Swinging Bridge. <br /><br />\r\n\r\nVehicle Permits are needed to stop and see the sites. Purchase your permit online before you arrive to save you having to do it once you're here. The park office is open daily at 10 a.m. if you wish to purchase it in person. <br /><br />\r\n\r\nNaturalist Programs: Programs are offered Friday through Sunday through October 22nd. Check out the schedule on the event calendar website for the park or on the bulletin boards within the park.",

"whereToGo": "For the last 'hurrah' of fall colors the best way to enjoy the changing trees is by hiking the park trails. <b>Hiking Trails:</b> Good trails for color viewing include Mary Lake, Dr. Roberts, Two Spot, and DeSoto. Follow Brower Trail from Douglas Lodge to Peace Pipe Vista for views across the east arm of Lake Itasca. Deer Park Trail and Myrtle Lake Crossover have nice views across small lakes. Hike the North Country Trail across the park's south end for a mix of colors. Access the trail along Highway 113 to see color changes in the aspen. Climb the Aiton Heights fire tower for a panoramic view of the changing colors of the aspens. Be prepared for a line at the fire tower during the busy weekends.\r\n<b>Car Touring:</b> Enter the park along the South entrance for the gold colors as we peak in our second wave of colors in the aspens. Enjoy a view of the aspens around the many small lakes. The North Entrance offers views of changing aspen and tamaracks along the Mississippi River. You will see a mix of bare trees and the golden color changes as aspens turn. Continue driving north outside the park on the Great River Road route to La Salle Lake State Recreation Area for lovely views across the valley leading to the recreation area. Tour around the park's east boundary along Highway 200 or the south boundary along Highway 113 for more colorful views of the aspens.\r\n<b>Biking:</b> A casual bike ride is a nice way to enjoy the colors along the 9 miles of paved bike trail (with the option for another 7 miles along Wilderness Drive). Expect to see colorful aspens and pockets of trees with bare branches. ",

Early this fall drought conditions assisted with a rapid color change for the maples, the star of the show. Then consistent rain helped the leaves fall quite quickly. The oak trees are just starting to turn but are rather dull and loosing leaves quickly. Ever walked on a glacial ridge? The logging camp trail here at Savanna Portage would be a perfect trail to hike on. The logging camp trail follows the top of a glacial esker ridge. To access this trail head, you can park at the Park Headquarters building and walk north on Lake Place Road for a couple hundred yards. Once, on the trail you can appreciate the lovely sound of nature and the wind wisping around you, on windy days. Once, you reach the end of the trail you will see large colorful interpretive signs at the Portage trail. At the base of the hill, in the 1900s, there was once home to the Weyerhauser and then the Nelson logging camp. ",
