One mile east of the visitor area on highway 210.  Half way there will be a nice pull over spot along the highway at a highway bridge for a great river view.  Continue on to the picnic area with a lot of maple trees in color, then walk the paved paths to the river overlooks.  There are three to choose from. Two along the path and one on Ogantz Trail. Early this fall drought conditions assisted with a rapid color change for the maples, the star of the show. Then consistent rain helped the leaves fall quite quickly. The oak trees are just starting to turn but are rather dull and loosing leaves quickly. Ever walked on a glacial ridge? The logging camp trail here at Savanna Portage would be a perfect trail to hike on. The logging camp trail follows the top of a glacial esker ridge. To access this trail head, you can park at the Park Headquarters building and walk north on Lake Place Road for a couple hundred yards. Once, on the trail you can appreciate the lovely sound of nature and the wind wisping around you, on windy days. Once, you reach the end of the trail you will see large colorful interpretive signs at the Portage trail. At the base of the hill, in the 1900s, there was once home to the Weyerhauser and then the Nelson logging camp.
