| On Traditional Government Jobs | |
| Note: I have never actually worked a government job, so this is just my speculation based on stereotypes. | |
| I think one reason people think that government doesn't work well is because run of the mill government employees aren't elite employees. Amazon was accused of being "darwinian" at one point. People who suck at their job or who don't like their job were offered money to quit. I actually didn't enjoy the specific job I had when I worked at Amazon and there was no way for me to hold on to it indefinetely - either you get promoted or you gently get pushed out of the company. Salaries aren't flat - there is bonus and stock. Salaries change from year to year depending on performance. The best people get paid more. Traditional government jobs aren't like that. Traditional government jobs have a degree of job security that does not exist in, for example, Amazon. I would be surprised to hear a boss of a government employee tell them that they will receive money for quitting if they quit within a certain period of time. Traditional government jobs aren't "cut throat". | |
| For those reasons, I think that's why government workers have a reputation for being complacent and government work (example: the ObamaCare website that costed tons of money and then crashed) has a reputation of sucking. Private, competitive, capitalist companies don't just pay people money to sit around and do nothing, but governments have and do. |
