Tiny Content Framework

Tiny Content Framework

About the project

This is a tiny content strategy framework focused on goals, messages, and branding. This is not a checklist. Use what you need and scrap the rest. Rewrite it or add to it. These topics should help you get to the bottom of things with clients and other people you work with.

Give me feedback on Twitter (@nicoleslaw) or by email ([email protected]).

pnginator: pack Javascript into a self-extracting PNG

A Better Mongoid Sinatra configuration implementation. Using settings hash for db options sucks!
# This is a modification of the blogpost on how to use Mongoid and Sinatra.
# Here is the original blogpost http://www.garrensmith.com/2010/09/11/Mongoid-sinatra.html
# The modification lets you use Mongoid 3.0 with the new Moped driver
# The new Moped driver uses the Sessions component to define the MongoDB connection rather
# than the Mongo::Connection.new that is used in the case of the default Ruby driver.
# Moped::Session.new vs Mongo::Connection.new
# Mongoid.load!(yaml_config.yml) is used to build the config hash. Alternatively, the hash can
# be built manually by using Mongoid.config {|config| ...} syntax. The config.sessions hash

Generate Appcache (incl. xhr) in Chrome DevTools

Generate Appcache Manifest (incl. xhr) in Chrome DevTools

  1. Open your Chrome Developer Tools
  2. Navigate to the Network tab
  3. Just right click into the panel and choose Copy ALL as HAR (maybe the page needs a reload)
  4. Switch to the console tab and save your HAR data in a variable. (var data = cmd + v)
  5. Now let's create the cache manifest:
console.log('CACHE MANIFEST\n\nCACHE:');

Raspberry Pi setup

Raspberry Pi setup

Just wanted a quick start guide for myself so that I wouldn't have to keep rooting through Google to remember all this stuff. Hopefully it helps other people.

If you had other ideas or suggestions please leave a comment.

Useful things to own before you buy a Pi

The first time I bought a Pi I was enormously frustrated with myself because I didn't own all of this stuff. Kept having to order things off of Amazon and wait to get started... very irritating. This is all good stuff to have laying around anyway:

Ever wanted to repeat parts of your markup while building templates? Do it like this!
$(function(){
$('*[data-repeat]').each(function(){
var n = $(this).data('repeat');
var parent = $(this).parent();
self = $(this);
for (var i = 0; i < n; i++) {
self.after(self.clone());
}
})
});

Lesson's learnt building the Guardian

Below is a collection of my favourite responses I gathered from Guardian engineers when asked the question: What have you learnt starting from scratch and building a mobile-first next generation web platform for the Guardian?

Daithi O Crualaoich

  • Work with great people.
  • Deploy like crazy. This means the team has to control the infrastructure as well as code.
  • Design is not a service. Designers have to sit in the team.
  • Infrastructure is intrinsically unreliable. Discard and replace is the robust strategy.
  • Use your CDN for HTML too.
  • Don't always do as you are told.
