Seattle for Michael
  • Northwest Tofu (Chinese)
    • Especially the salt+pepper tofu and the salty soy milk (which is a soup), but other things are good.
  • Hoang Lan (Vietnamese)
    • the bun rieu here is amazing (best I've had). Known for their Bun bo hue. All the grilled meats, etc., are good. Pho is okay.
  • Crumble and Flake (Patisserie)
    • Especially the Kouign Amann and the Chewios
  • Eltana (Montreal bagels)
  • Slim's Last Chance Chilli Shack (Chilli, beer, more chilli)
  • Top Pot Doughnuts
  • John Howie
    • for the steak
  • Fran's Chocolates
    • only for the salted caramels. The other chocolates are not great
  • Theo's Chocolates
    • see if you can get a tour. The exotic chocolate bars are good
  • Pho Bac
    • my favourite pho, although a bit sweet for some people. Be sure to squeeze limes into the broth.
  • Shiro in Bell Town (sushi)
  • Uwajimaya in the International District
    • best Japanese supermarket I've seen outside of Japan.
  • Paseo
    • for amazing cuban sandwiches. Likely to be quite a queue.
  • Steelhead diner
    • not the most amazing overall, but they have a variety of salmon to choose from.
  • Elliott's
    • for the oysters. No other reason to go here that I remember.
  • Din Tai Fung
    • in Bellevue. Get lots of xiao long bao, and then get some more xiao long bao.
  • Skillet burger
  • Serious pie
  • Salumi (Ed recommends this)
  • Molly Moon's (ice cream)
  • Matt's in the Market
    • a reliable brunch place
  • Adey Abeba
    • good Ethiopian restaurant. Better than I've found in London, best I've found in Seattle.
  • Anything Sandy recommends

Coffee shops

  • Slate
    • a new third-wave coffee shop in Ballard that is really nice
  • Espresso Vivace
    • a Seattle institution on Broadway. One of the first places to really make third-wave style espresso drinks
  • Pegasus
    • don't get espresso drinks here. The regular filter coffee is a good example of classic second-wave West Coast coffee that I grew up with.

Bars

  • Canon
  • Knee-high stocking club
  • Lot 3 (across from the office. This place is amazing. Get the bacon and some bourbon).
  • Anything Pete Andrijeski recommends
